C'mon people..... quit being so naive, there are drugs in every community big or small, including this little perceived fantasy Utopia know has Hawthorne Village. I find it shocking that there are people out there who are shocked some 15 year olds smoke pot.

How about police. It is their job we are paying for our taxes.
We came here from Aurora, at this town local police is doing “the cleaning” for known trouble spots from time to time. Last time I remember they have about 50 people arrested. The problem is, these bad teens will be back on the street next day they are getting arrested.

Reading through this chain of posts I'm sensing a sort of gathering momentum that leaves me a bit uncomfortable.

We've gone from 15 year olds smoking pot to "suspicious teens", "bad teens", "police" and "arrests".

I'm not advocating the behaviour but at the same time I'd hate to see us feed into an overeactive paranoia or misguided vigilanteism.

Call me crazy but these 15 year olds might respond well to simply being asked to smoke their pot in places other than the park because of the young kids around. Why do I think that might work? Because I've done this before. And I was also once one of those kids. Failing that, more serious measures would make sense. I'm not so naive to think the kids may not take this seriously.

Now if they are literally damaging property or being either disruptive or disrespectful, that's another matter - but I haven't read evidence of that here.

You have to take in consideration. What is there for teenagers to do in Milton. There is nothing really except the bike and skateboarder park. But there is no teenage entertainment.

When teenagers get bored they go to different kinds of activities. The teenagers in Milton need places to go and have fun. That's my two cents

Oakie, I grew up in milton without a bike park and without a skateboard park. I was not one of the pot heads in town. There are a lot of things to do, you just need to find them. Also, my parents would not let me wander around at 15 to get in trouble. I would have my friends over at my place, or I would go to other friends houses whose parents would not let us go out and wander around.
I do not buy the "there is nothing to do" argument.

I have not run into it here yet, but at my old place in Mississauga, it was not kids walking around smoking dope, it was the grown adults!

out walking their dogs, smoking a "J", quickly putting their hands in their pocket when you turn the corner (ya, like you cannot smell it!)

I do not judge people, and 15 is young to start that stuff, but hey you leave me alone and do not cause a disruption I will leave you alone. WHy cause a problem if there is none? But if the park around my house and the forest behind it becomes the "party spot", God help those kids!

I must say it's not just the teenagers doing it.
On our nightly walks I pass plenty of houses with the adults sitting out on their front porch doing it also.
I'd just ask the teenagers who are doing in the park to find somewhere else to go to do it.....I've done it plenty of times and they've all pretty much reacted positively to it.
It's when you drill them and talk down to them that they take it negatively of course and that causes a bad reaction.

who is being relaxed about this issue?

I re-read the posts and I think you are misinterpretting people's comments. No one advocates or justifies their behaviour.

People are more surprised about the fact that some people are surprised that this is happening.

c'mon people do your jobs as parents and do somthing!!!

I think that the origional post was more of a warning for those parents who let their children go ot the park unattended....and that maybe they should think twice about letting them go due to some teens smoking pot there. thats what i got out of it....

Most of the people who responded were just saying that it is everywhere not just in the park, and Goulart you are right in saying that we should teach our children how to make good decisions but.....would i stop them from going to the park because some teens have been spotted smoking pot there..personally no.....Just like i would not stop them from going to school becuase teens there smoke pot too! (Im a teacher and have seen it first hand) so its not just in the park.....

And, in MY OPINION (i put this in caps b/c im only speaking for me and dont want to be beheaded for implying anything where others are concerned...im not yelling) I think that parents are doing their jobs by being educated about the issues that teens face today but also realize that you can teach your children all the right things to do and cross your fingers and hope everything youve taught sinks in....as they get older you cannot be with them all the time.....and then its their decision to make at that time.....and again im not saying that i agree with it...i would hate for my kids to do it...and would do everything i could to stop them........the parents responding here are doing so because they are aware of the issues not because they are ok with this and are not willing to do anything about it....i think somewhere there was a miscommunication.....

Again, Just my opinion.....
Adrienne

Goulart,

Nobody is advocating anything, but let's face it some teens and adults are gonna smoke the odd joint. This has been going on since the dawn of time and is not likely to change anytime soon. While obviously none of us want to see crack being dealt in our local parks to think none of your neighbours or local kids are ever gonna smoke pot is totally rediculous. I'm not supporting smoking anything here but 99% of people who have smoked a joint don't end up addicts. I certainly wouldn't be happy if my son smoked pot but to think kids are never gonna experiment with alcohol or drugs is unrealistic. What would you propose as a parent to keep kids from experimenting?? When you find a community in which none of your neighbours or local teens smoke pot pls let us know. Maybe there is one called Fantasyville somewhere???? Way more important things in the community or this world to be come so outraged about.

Respectively yours,

Bud

Okay I am going to take a few forums and condense them into this one message.

Reality of Life:

Dogs will pee on your lawn from time to time, you will live through it
Your neighbours will be rowdy one night later then usual, you will catch up on your sleep the next night
Some drivers will speed, your insurance rate is lower
You will meet people you don't like, they are someone else's best friend
Kids will experiment in the park..and their parents won't know... and they will grow up to be very successful
Someone's habits will annoy you, guess what you annoy someone else
If something happens consistently deal with the person not just label a group
Hawthorne Village will be flawed as is every neighbourhood

and that is deep thoughts by Hankoeck

You are in fact correct Matt.
I'm protecting my identity due to the fact that once when I was a teenager I drank a few beers and even though I never inhaled smoked a couple times. I just don't want any of the local holier than thou pot vigilantes staging a protest outside of my house :P
