I commute from James Snow & Clark to Dufferin and Steeles....via the 407 both ways. The cost is definitely worth the stress I save.

I was considering some job opportunities way out in the East end. Jobs in Woodbridge, Markham and Richmond Hill allow the use of the 407 as an option to have a lower-stress commute, but downtown job commutes can be nightmares since there is no toll highway to get down there.

Public transit is not very ideal to me because you are operating on their schedule, and can be taken hostage by calamaties, bad weather, and heck, maybe even by terrorists. It should only be a last resort.

Okay.. used to be to Toronto, and like many here timed it so I missed the mad rush hour traffic but now... have been transfered.. (ready here it comes).... wait for it...

NEWMARKET!!!!!!!!!

Hwy. 401 to Hwy 407 to Hwy 400 to Hwy 9

Beat that! ha... oh wait.. it kinda sucks actually but at least I am going against traffic most of the way!

My husband and I both work in Milton so our commutes are about 5 minutes....longer when we walk or take the bike.

Really? Do you time your commutes as best you can, or do you just deal with the traffic? Any particular routes you take to get into the core?

I just can't deal with public transit even though it is more environmentally friendly.

I once heard you talking on AM640, I think. Pretty cool

I work in Milton about a 10 minute drive from home. My wife works from home 95% of the time but wouldn't you know it, today she had to go to Markham for the day. The fellow employee she rode with came from Guelph and said it took an hour and a half on the 401 alone from Guelph to Milton. Don't know how long it took them to get from Milton to Markham and back though, haven't had a chance to ask her as even though she's back home she's still working and been on the phone for most of the past 6 hours. My wife works very long hours.

That's just insanity. We need cool modern trains that run from Kitchener/Waterloo/Guelph/Milton to downtown via the airport. Full day 20 min between trains service both ways. We could learn alot from some other modern transit countries like France and Denmark etc. But sadly here in Canuckstan, that will never happen. When Milton hits 350.000 humans, it will take 3 hours to get to Winston Churchill from JSP.

I work at Yonge/Sheppard and take the GO Bus in. Getting very frustrated after yesterday and today.

Normally the commute isn't too bad -- it's just under 1.5 hours consistently (that is, until the snow arrives).

My issue with the GO Bus commute is the same as someone else mentioned on another thread: the "milk run" as I call it, which emcompasses a billion stops along Derry through Mississauga to Meadowvale Town Centre and then onto Meadowvale GO Station and the disaster that is Derry Road out of Milton.

Today for instance, it took 2 hrs to get into work -- 1 hr from Milton to Meadowvale. One hour to Meadowvale Station!?! Yesterday during the first storm of the year (always a treat), it took 3 hours to get to Yonge/Sheppard but get this -- almost 2 hours to get to Mississauga Rd./407 after the Meadowvale GO Station stop!!!

I actually don't mind taking the GO Bus -- much more comfortable than the train, and for me there is no transferring to another bus/subway etc., but I've been saying forever there needs to be at least one Milton express bus that skips Mississauga and gets straight on the 401 at Trafalgar.

The longest part of the commute is getting out of Milton! I don't know how Miltonians are going to cope as the population continues to grow -- it really is unbelievable how much time it takes just to get out of town in the mornings! On days I have driven, it takes 10-15 minutes just to get on the 401 from JSP!!! As Salmonz said, once you get past the 401/407, the drive is a breeze into Toronto.

And back to the GO Bus -- the "milk run" as I call it is ridiculous -- on the way home, people at Meadowvale Town Centre will get on with groceries, shopping bags etc. and then take the GO Bus home to the Derry/9th line area.... this is a commuter bus people - arrrrgh.

One Milton express GO Bus -- that's all I want. I'm not holding my breath.

Don't even get me started on how long it's taken to widen Derry between Milton and Mississauga -- I've been taking the GO Bus since '04 and that stretch has been under construction the whole time. 5+ years?? This couldn't have been completed in less than five years?!?

ok, back to work now. /rant

I work in the north end of Guelph and it takes me no more than 45 minutes door to door. HVE west on Derry and north on Guelph Line, 401 W to the Hanlon and then up that dreaded road (expressway it is not!). I don't mind the drive as it helps me prepare/unwind from work and helps me practice my singing voice.

Sunnier, I live in the Yonge and Sheppard area and have been commuting to Milton for the last 10 years. I bought a Mattamy TH and will move in at the end of 2010. The drive is horrible most times. The fastest time I've gotten home was 31 minutes (longest 2.5 hours) and that's driving 120kmh on the 401. I work rotating shifts and the drive home in the mornings just pushed to finally make the move to Milton. Sadly, I'll be selling my condo and bidding farewell to the driving madness. I work in Milton and my new commute will be 6.2km and 9 minutes.

Aside from papabear, is there anyone who stoically commutes daily to the downtown TO core and specifically refuse to take the GO Train? If so, what time do you leave for work and from work, and what routes are best aside from 401-427-Gardiner to get downtown? I know since a lot of the HVE phases have been completed since this thread was last active, it has been much harder getting on to the highway.

I go the EX. Gave up on the 401 long ago, now 25 and QEW.
Unfortunately the GO is useless to get there since the trains are on the wrong line for the EX stop.

Really, the QEW is faster than 401 - 427 even if you leave say before 7am?

I work near the CBC building and I drive. I live near Derry and Scott. My schedule rotates but when I work in the morning I leave around 6 am and it takes me about an hour each on average. I work at 7am to 3pm. I've tried Derry/JSP/401/427/Gardiner, Scott/Bronte/Steeles/Martin/401/427/Gardiner, Derry/Trafalgar/QEW/Gardiner, Tremaine/Brittania/Trafalgar/Dundas/Wstn Churchill/QEW/Gardiner and they all work out to be about the same. If I do have some extra time I'll take Lower Baseline to Britannia on my way home. A nice drive.

The GO train from Milton doesn't leave on time for me and if I take the bus then I figure I may as well drive. I don't see a point in driving to Oakville or Clarkson to catch the GO train. If I take the GO bus I usually don't get back until at least 16:30 or later and still have to drive home.

I roughly worked out commute time for public transit and it was close to two (work)months of the year versus less than half of that if I drove myself. Every once in a while there are incidents where traffic is a mess and it will take another hour to get home but that still out weighs the time I would waste being packed in like a sardine on public transit. I gave it a shot but it just wasn't for me. The GO is slightly cheaper but for what I save in money I lose a lot in time.

If the GO train schedules from Milton matched my work times then I may consider being packed in like a sardine.
