so I just had my frame walk today (well early yesterday morning), and they had the vent and the drains/plumbing setup so the washer was on the right and dryer on the left ("wrong" combo). The framewalk guy told us that he has never had a problem with this "issue" ... whether people had the washer on the left and dryer on the right, he even told me all washer/dryers have interchangeable hinges so you can switch the doors... anyway, he reluctantly agreed to move the venting and plumbing to suit my "needs" ... but for those that have mirror image floor plans and want front loaders, make a note of this! or even specifically request it at time of your structural appointment at the DC

edit: typo!

I thought the washer/dryer doors were interchangable as well...and I was soooo wrong. I asked our appliance place this as well, and they said they weren't as well. It has to do with the seal on the washer or something. (on a front load)

Anyhow, though I'm with a different builder, our floor plan was NOT reversed, but we still had the washer on the right. I had to flip it as it drove me NUTS. It ended up costing us an extra $100-$150 or so...(I can't remember...we are a GAS dryer too) to lengthen the gas fitting and the vent and the washer pipes.

I would DEFINATELY fight to have them switch it around.....

Jessica :)

there seems to be a discrepancy between the photo that you posted with the dryer on the left and the washer on the right and your above statement "the washer was on the left and dryer on the right ("wrong" combo)"....maybe you typed it wrong, but if you didn't and the washer is fact on the LEFT then that would be correct and you don't want them to change it.

thank you, I fixed it, it was a typo!

So what is the best position of washer/dryer? Our floor plan is not reversed, and during my structural appointment I was told and also it is on the floor plan that washer will be on the left and dryer on the right. Is that ok?

well I guess there's no "best" position... it'll depend on your preference and type of washer/dryer you get too...

from what I've seen TYPICALLY front loaders will have the washers open right to left and the dryers open left to right, so ideally you would want the washer on the left and dryer on the right so the doors don't open into each other...

I am pretty sure if you catch something pre-close like the room is setup with the dryer on the left, Mattamy will correct. Just try to catch these things early.

We went 3 weeks with the washer on the left, and then ended up stacking them. They don't look as fancy as they used to, but so much nicer having that room in the laundry room.

Under 40 bucks for the stacking kit and its been great!

Bringing this thread back to life.

What is the success rate in getting them to change the ducting/plumbing to have Washer Right, Dryer Left?
We have our drains and ducting roughed in already, but it's still early on. Not all plumbing is complete yet. I brought this up verbally with the construction office during my Pre-Const. meeting, but failed (my own fault) to force it in writing. I was told "we do it the standard way, it should be fine" and I never thought to check the floor plan (again, probably my fault).
Who the f*** puts the dryer on the left? Every childhood memory I have of being in any home... be in my own place, grand parents, fat aunts, skinny uncles... where ever it may be, the Dryer was always on the Right.

We placed our laundry units in the basement.
Our washer and dryer locations were reversed too and we noticed this after they poured the concrete in the basement floor.
Our floor plan showed the 'correct' placement.
Mentioned it to the head builder at Mattamy U. He didn't really care.
Fortunately the builder for our house wanted things done correctly.
It took 3 attempts before they got it right.
I even drew them a diagram with measurements.
The vent opening for our dryer was so far away, they had to create another opening closer to the dryer.
They placed it where it was most convenient for them but if you don't feel you're getting what you paid for then I'd talk to them.
Good luck.

Scotian, I believe your TH is not a mirror image, so you "should" get the washer on the left and the dryer on the right. I made sure during my DC appointment that my consultant wrote on my contract that I get the standard non mirror image setup.

Our washer is on the left and the dryer is on the right. The washer door swings open to the left and the dryer door swings open to the right, so it all works out. I can drag clothes from the washer to the dryer without having to pull it all out (bed sheets).

Ours meet in the middle and it is a bit of a pain, wish we had known to change it but we figured we'd be able to switch the doors on the machines to accomodate whatever the builder did. Silly us, we could only do that on the dryer, not the washer. Our laundry room is so small that I have to close the laundry room door to open the washer to put clothes in or take them out and then re-open it while the washer door is still open to actually grab the loads from the hallway (since like I said the room is so small we caa't actually keep everything in there)

A minor inconveniece yes, but still one. We can't stack our machines since we opted for the upper cabinets as well. So if you can change it, do!
