Perhaps it's at the subconscious level, but I think that's what it boils down to. Though I'm no psychologist. :)

Very troubling, but I have to agree. I tried not to comment but the subject keeps coming up. I don't think this is about his profession.

When I see people say things like:
Quote:
. Coates crossing would appeal to everyone, why are they bringing names of non born residents

or
Quote:
I am ok if its called TJS

or
Quote:
his real name is better, J S Hans

I am very sure if the school was named W.J. Watson and someone did google that name(most people will not even raise an eyebrow) and found out Watson was a wrestler we would probably not even have a thread on the topic here (maybe 1 on miltonmommies or so)

My opinion, subconscious fear of something different from the norm is what is going on, the wrestler angle is just a plain and obvious excuse so people don't call you the "R" word.

I don't like the school being named after a wrestler. I think it's a pointless, barbaric WASTE OF TIME! But since this singh fellow has doled out some $$ to the town he gets a school named after him?? Sorry, I don't believe any wrestler regardless of their stance in the community, should have a school named for them.

A school should not be named after an INDIVIDUAL no matter who or what he has done, for THOUSANDS of people are involved. Name the school after an area where it is located in the community not after a PERSON. The town knew how much commotion this would cause and I know there must be underlying reasons why an INDIVIDUAL gets awarded a school after themselves.

There is no commotion in the real world. There are just a few people using internet codenames who post things on a faceless forum. It has been well established that the internet is the venue of choice for people to express opinions in anonymous fashion in ways they would never articlate in the real world.

Also, because we live in the real world, there have been several generations that have seen schools named after people. I don't recall hearing you or reading your posts when another school in Milton was named after an anglo astronaut. If I am incorrect on that last point, let me know.

Sadly enough the letters" section in this Thursdays champion resembles this thread. I really scratch my head at what the champion prints sometimes.

Ive tryed to stay out of this till now but how do you come up with the idea that singh has done more for the town then PL robertson ? may be you should look back in history at some of the things PL robertson has done in the early years of our town. my ancestors date back to the 1800S in and around milton and robertson did great things to help mold this town and its people.

This isn't a contest. They both did great things. Just b/c some know what Robertson did and don't fully know what Singh did/does, doesn't make Singh unworthy.

Also, the point wasn't Robertson in particular. It was the angloness of the name. I alluded to that with the Hadfield/astronaut comment. People weren't this intolerant about those namings.

Here's my "White as ***k" take on this entire fiasco.

In defense of those who firmly dislike the new school's name, YES, it's because of the name 'Singh'. The 'defense' part of this is that it's not about RACE.

I can't stand when people throw that word around. To me, racism is to think that one's skin colour makes them more entitled, more superior or more advantageous species.

Ok, wow. This is now a technical discussion. Here are the definitions. If not "racism", then "intolerance".

Quote:

rac·ism   /ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Show Spelled[rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
–noun
1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

in·tol·er·ance   /ɪnˈtɒlərəns/ Show Spelled[in-tol-er-uhns] Show IPA
–noun
1.lack of toleration; unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect contrary opinions or beliefs, persons of different races or backgrounds, etc.
2.incapacity or indisposition to bear or endure: intolerance to heat.
3.abnormal sensitivity or allergy to a food, drug, etc.
4.an intolerant act.

I am against it being named after his stage name. It should be his real name. That is my only issue.

LOL, what a funny topic. I was reading this one book recently, and now I can see that it made so much sense. People care 80% of the time about thing that will never affect their life. I think instead of getting upset about school name many should really start thinking about things that really matter: family, friends, health and finances.

Friggin HST did not have topic that long, and that something that will really impact each and single one.

Besides, if the guy did something nice for this community why does he have to be rewarded after death? I think we should really reward people while they are alive for their deeds, because once they are gone; it’s a little too late. Might as well get a prison sentence after we die???
And when it comes to a skin color, give me a break, people are people. If you were in a boat accident, I bet most would not care what color was a helping hand which would pull you out of water. So start living real life and care about something that really matters.
Sorry for coming across a little too rough, it is late at night

When I worked downtown as a recruiter I had long said that Toronto isn't really a racist city ... but it's definitely culturalist. You see this within many corporate companies ... they don't really care about the colour of skin when hiring anymore but DO care about "fit". And usually that "fit" they are looking for is somebody (no matter what race/background) who can speak fluent English with minimal accent and has been educated at a Canadian institution (although no corporate company would ever admit to this of course). But I digress.

Interesting about recruiting, a Toronto recruiter once said, if I can't pronounce the name, I don't even bother calling him/her for an interview. Racist? No, but it's what we are talking about here, the inherent risk of judging others by a specific attribute and making a fundamental perception error.....why should some have an advantage over others because of the colour of their eyes, skin or last name? If Mr. Tiger Jeet Singh was Mr. Tiger J Campbell would we be having this much debate? Simple answer is no.
