Are we really becoming a "me" society? According to another article, no one even called 911 or reported the incident (which is why they dont have a witness). Heck if they just pushed the yellow strip the subway would stop at the next station with doors locked and those people could be arrested.

If you create an extreme culture of "I-will-never-risk-my-safety-no-matter-what" then you'll create a soceity where you will never be safe. I don't expect people to physically confront but a single phone call to the police wouldn't kill them.

Police are asking bystanders to come forward after a subway car full of passengers ignored the cries of a 79-year-old man who was being mugged.
...
Despite being held down as his wallet was taken, Hizel said none of the onlookers came to his rescue, even as he cried out for help.

“People didn't have a reaction — they just looked at me,” Hizel said. “I was frustrated.”

Hizel got off the train and tried to chase down the suspects at Chester station, where a TTC ticket collector called the police. His wallet was later found outside the station.

“We do encourage customers, if they see another customer or passenger in distress — whether it's a medical incident or a criminal occurrence — to press the yellow strip,” said Ross.

TTC records show that nobody hit the alarm during Saturday's incident.
....

pssst you forgot to say "vote for me"

1 person had to push the emergency button. Thats it. What happens is the subway car is on lock down and the subway stops at the next station until a TTC special constable arrives...
