problem is these thieves don't read the villager or they would know we're onto them :)

honestly a good ol' fashioned beating is much more effective than whatever the police would do for these crimes

more people = more crime
Just the way it is, if it hasn't increased (although I believe it has) I can guarentee you this will only get worse, not better.

It's not that the number of people has increased but that the quality and character of people have decreased.

Family values like respect, honesty and consideration have gone by the wayside. Parents today say "kids wil be kids" instead of allowing them to face the consequences of their actions. We teach kids that they are never responsible for their actions. No homework done? We're robbing them of a childhood. No chores done? It's their room, they don't need to clean it. Spending irresponsibly? Mummy & Daddy will bail out. Criminal activity? Society has failed them. Stole from someone's driveway? Well they should have locked their car - kids will be kids.

It's not the number of people in Milton that's the issue.

The last guy who was seen doing this was mid-40's! No one can really say "kids will be kids" on that one...

The way I see it, is when I was younger if you did ANYTHING that was even remotely "criminal" someone saw you and called your parents. That was the kind of town this was, everyone knew everything about everyone. Not that I enjoyed everyone in my business, but it had it's benefits when it came to this kind of stuff.
Now if someone sees a shady person on the street, we don't approach them, or call the police, instead we turn a blind eye and mind our own business...(most people anyway)
It's just a different dynamic I guess, and maybe that just makes it feel like there's more criminal activity, because nobody reports anything until it's too late.

The important thing about all these thefts is they must be reported in order for the Halton Police to track them...and possibly gain clues as to who the culprit is. It may seem like an inconvenience, but it should be done.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the head's up GregoryL. Unfortunately what happened to you is a very common occurence in Milton. What I mean by that is MANY people do not lock the doors to their car OR their house! I know this becasue we are (The Milton Community Policing Committee (MCPC)) is constantly updated on this from Halton Regional Police. In fact the MCPC will be conducting a joint effort in 2011 to raise awareness of this issue in the "Lock It Or Lose It Campaign". The MCPC will be distributing brochures to remind people to lock all doors to protect their valuables. I will inform everyone when the campaign begins. I look forward to educating Miltonians on this and other safety issues in conjuction with the MCPC and Halton Regional Police as I became the Town of Milton's representative on the Milton Community Policing Committee last night, of which I am very honoured and grateful to serve on.

For more information on the Milton Community Policing Committee please visit their website www.haltonpolicingcommittees.ca

p.s. I am no longer the Chair of the MCPC and will ask the committee to update their website to list the new Chair.

Kindest Regards,
Tony Lambert

And if police were more concerned about patrolling our streets then setting up speed traps (for those of us who want to get to our homes).....

how many times can people say... don't leave valuables in your car...and LOCK YOUR DOORS! thieves rarely "break" into vehicles, because there are more than enough cars UNLOCKED!!! come on....

So I have a theory, not solid, but a theory regardless. Its also baseless, so I'm not accusing anyone at this stage, but I thought I would generate the idea for discussion.

Who is out patrolling the streets at 1am - 5am that people wouldnt even bother noticing on the streets at night? Parking Control. These guys make peanuts for wages, so there is certainly financial incentive to steal. They would generally know the habits of the neighbourhoods as they are constantly patrolling them. They can also get close to cars without arousing suspicion.

I know it sounds crazy, but in this day and age anything is possible.

Yeah blame it on Parking control guys.

Hmmm, Mara Circle (nice street!) is pretty close to me, so not good that it happened.

Sometimes you just forget and get unlucky, and other times we slip up and get away with it, so I hope you get everything resolved okay. It was most likely petty thieves or teenagers off from school on holiday. It happens to the best of us. Good chefs have screwed up a dish before, and a car guy like me once forgot to tighten a drain plug bolt after an oil change after doing them hundreds of times = a bit of a mess after.

No one has a right to peoples' belongings, but I've always believed it's always better to be defensive in this world. The world (this community included overall) is still full of great people, but a society likes ours isn't a utopia either, and there are bad apples out there. Always best to be defensive and keep your guard up; i.e. one of my neighbours who seems friendly hit my parked car on the street in Nov, but won't own up to it.

If you're that concerned, get a big dog. Best protection there is ... and instant response time. :)

People complain about dogs barking all the time but they're by far the best robbery, home invasion and theft prevention. Im hoping everyone on my street has dogs.
