Honestly, I posted it because I thought it was worth noting. Canadians complain that they have no history, no tradition to celebrate. Here's a piece of history that I believe is worth celebrating; something that really impacts our lives today. Pierre Trudeau was a fascinating man in a way he can still totally polarize us over a decade after his death.
The man had guts, and vision to at least try something different. He achieved something in the agreement of 11 of 12 provincial/ territorial leaders on one document (remember Quebec didn't sign on, and Nunavut didn't exist yet). In a country as diverse as ours is, that deserves applause. We do invoke the Charter- we enjoy the right to speak freely, to assemble freely, and the right to Equality. The right to Equality protects us from discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation or gender.
Like Trudeau or not this is part of history. The Charter is something to be proud of instead of doing the typically Canadian thing and putting it down.
It is worth noting, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and the charter has all of that.
I don't complain that we have no history, but liberal twitish thinking tries hard to erode it.
IMO the fascination with Trudeau is strange and ugly. He was a commie lover and an embarrassment to our nation. So please don't imply that without the charter we would not have the right to speak freely, to assemble freely, and the right to equality, etc.
When Trudeau died his legacy was cynically manipulated, grossly distorted, and cloyingly sentimentalized by his Liberal Party minions to win votes in upcoming elections. Trudeau's sainted ghost is used like the corpse of the Spanish hero, El Cid, who's dead body was strapped onto a horse and sent into battle.
Most Canadians have been brainwashed into believing the charming and charismatic Trudeau was a great prime minister who built a strong, prosperous, humane Canada that was morally and socially superior to the United States. This fable was charmingly echoed by the leftish Toronto media in tributes to St. Pierre.
Trudeau went from rich socialist professor who had never held a real job in his life to prime minister. Canada's national debt was a modest $11.3 billion; the federal deficit was zero. When Trudeau left office in 1984, the debt had mushroomed to $128 billion. So, if you think our debt is bad now, take a walk down Trudeau's path of outrageous national debt and 20% interest rates.
Trudeau and the Liberal's learned a basic strategy of Europe's socialist governments, that if the state can employ over half of voters, they will always vote for the party of government.
Behind the charade of peacekeeping, Trudeau destroyed Canada's once powerful armed forces, leaving the nation a helpless military eunuch with virtually no international influence and totally dependant on the USA for national defense.
Trudeau the commie, was anti-American and even allowed Cuba's intelligence service to operate against the US from Montreal. He despised the free market and tried to transform Canada into a socialist nation as he fawned over marxist dictators like Mao and Castro.
