While it does piss me off to go down to 3.. what pisses me off more to see how few people seem to use their green and blue box. I DONT want a dump by my house, and if everyone does their part hopefully this will extend our current one.

I use my green bin regularly, no food goes in my garbage...I use my blue bins and have been using the larger size ones for years now...I can easily fill three bags of garbage with all the other crap I need to clear out and get rid of...sure hope my neighbours don't mind the smell of dog poop because it looks like that'll be sitting for longer.

Also curious as to why dog poop cannot be put in the green bin containers. It is biodegradeable and you can buy biodegradeable dog waste bags, so why not?

We are far from heros but it is more than do-able, and I agree with this proposal.

We are a family of 7. 2 adults, a teen, 3 other school age children and a baby in diapers. We also have a large dog. (lab).

We normally put out 2 barely full garbage bags every 2 weeks.

I don't see how this is a problem for people other than for some to change their ways/habits. I also agree with the landfill comment above.

Jessica :)

So if 85% of households already puts out 3 bags or less, how is this going to improve anything? Looks like we're doing a pretty good job already

Seems like more of a cash-grab than sustainability

[quote="muzee"]This is awful!

Question - isn't your property tax tied in with the size of your home? People who pay for bigger homes (bigger families) should be allowed more bags than smaller homes which pay less. Otherwise standardize the taxes too!

I'm not sure how this idea would work.
What if a large family that lives in a smaller home is generating the same amount of garbage or more than a family living in a bigger home?

Totally do-able, and has been in the work for quite some time as part of the bigger regional waste management strategy development. I remeber going to public consultations on the draft waste management strategy in 2011. The members of the Inter-Municipal Regional Waste Mamagement Committee (Colin the is Regional Councillor on that committee for all of Halton, and I believe it's Councillor Huffman who is the Milton local councillor representative) deserve credit for all these waste reduction initiatives and it's nice to see them finally getting to full regional council approval phase.

If you're filling your current green bin get a second.
Re: dog poop: It along with disposable diapers are not accepted by many companies who work with municipal compost programs because it limits the uses and saleability of the final refined product.

From the Region's Green Cart FAQ website:

Why are diapers, sanitary products and pet waste not accepted in the GreenCart?
Diapers and sanitary products contain plastics that do not compost.
Pathogens in pet waste decrease the quality of our finished compost product.
Including these items in the compost could result in the compost not meeting Ontario’s highest level of compost quality.
By not including these materials in the program, the Region has more options when it comes to processing.
The less contamination there is in the collected material, the better the quality of the final compost product making it easier to market the compost.

I support this proposal. We have bag tags at our cottage and it's not a big deal. We just buy a sheet of 5 at a time and stick them in a drawer. We can do the same here and it’s not a biggie for us to just add a tag on the days we go over limit.

I'm usually quite vocal against the town wasting tax money on goofball stuff like velodromes and big-ass empty buses, so can definitely support a proposal like this that will keep us all aware of how to lower collection and landfill costs going forward.

Will the bags be weighed and measured? If not, what is the point of all this?
Selfish & lazy habits can not be changed with a $2 fee. They may walk it down the street to a home with 2 bags or they may leave it on the curb for 2 weeks, or they may dump it in the school parking lot.
Quite certain few families are filling 3 garbage bags with rotting food bi-weekly nor would I anticipate anyone generating needless garbage just to ensure he gets his moneys worth on p/u days.

We barely put out a full garbage bag every other week. Dog poop goes into the park trash cans during walks. Yard waste in yard paper bags. My green bin is heaping full every week. And so are both of my recycling containers (on rare occasion I have to add a blue bag of recycling which thankfully they usually pick it up). Once I got a handle on what was be recyclable and what can be compost from the Halton website, we found that 75% of our trash went to blue/green bins for weekly pick ups.

I didn't even know that there were some residential regions of Milton that got weekly garbage pick ups...why is that?

This is pathetic. Our taxes already go toward garbage collection already. Does this mean taxes will be reduced by a proportional amount?

This is stupid. What you should do to make it fair is make the people getting the weekly pickups limited to 3 bags per week so every 2 weeks they have 6 bags total going out like the rest of us.

Did you guys even address this at your meetings or is everyone getting a hard on over the revenue that can be generated over the $2 tags.

People, there are no areas of Milton or Halton that get weekly garbage pick-up!
There are two rural areas of Halton Hills that do not get any garbage pick-up at all. They have to take their garbage to the dump themselves (I have a couple of friends who live in these areas).

You can't create rules based on exceptions ... really then those people in smaller homes with larger families should be levied with buying tags for their extra bags.

As already mentioned - it's all a cash grab.

I do agree with this statement. According to stats, 85% puts out 3 bags or less. I'm pretty sure that the other 15% also uses their blue and green bins but they simply have more garbages for whatever reasons (not laziness).

This is another way of saying - Let's get more money from the other 15% of the household! Well... they can not eat their extra garbages so they'll have to pay. Kaching!
