Screw Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss - I am going to make you come over and tell your stories to my future children.

They are epic.

Hey, did the posters who purchased the Napolean with the infra-red burners try them out to cook steaks the Ruth Chris way? If so, how did they turn out?

Lets clear all these misconceptions up here shall we. Below is a short story, by your favourite neighbourhood Milf hunter, Hawthorny.

After a devastating evening of beers, burgers, poutine and ribs, my stomach was literally a Mt. Vesuvius waiting to destroy all in its path. I had gone for a quick Timmies run and as I pulled into my driveway, I then realized that the coffee had acted quicker then expected. I got out of my car to make a B-Line for my front door, unfortunately nature didn't agree with my intentions and decided it was coming out then and there. I stood still, in my driveway, clinching my butcheeks together with the power of Thor. I swear if you had put coal in my anus at that point, I would have made diamonds. I gave myself a minute to decide the best course of action, by that time, the tidal wave of a shitstorm had temporarily subsided, so seeing my window of opportunity, I made my run for it. Knowing already that this was going to be a messy incident, I ran for the ensuite bathroom for instant access to the shower. While dropping my drawers, my Anus decided to give me a resounding "oh no you di-eeeeeent" and decided to erupt just as my pants went down, but before my ass hit the seat. What happened next, I am sure will be made into a movie remake one day. It was part fart, part sh*t, part stuff that flies out of your lawnmower when you cut your grass. It was pure Armageddon. Fortunately, I was able to stabilize the situation by finally getting on the seat, but nevertheless, the damage was done. The tank looked like it was one of those pic cards you see when you go to a psychiatrist. The floor was a disaster. As it was a post drinking sh*t, it was liquidy death and had crept into every crevice of the toilets inner workings. Ever have to clean sh*t out of 1/16" hole? I hope you haven't, because I have. Thats all for today folks.

Oh and Jack, the names are:

Nigella
Lexington
Sophia

Those names make it more manly

*** Worst part of that story for me. Standing still in my driveway like a tool while all of my neighbours stared at me like some wierdo.

The secret to an amazing steak is the meat itself, not so much the method of preparation. To properly gauge the effectiveness of these gimmicky features, you'd need to compare identical cuts of meat prepared by the same person.

I can not argue with your scientific method. I will rephrase.

Hey, did the posters who purchased the Napolean with the infra-red burners try cooking one with the first two flips on the infra red and then finishing the last two flips on the regular grill and comparing it to an identical steak cooked with all four flips on the regular grill? If so, how did they turn out and compare?

Have you used it now? I'm losing my patience.

I've used infrared burner many times now. At first it was "better" but now I would just say it was "different" which at first was perceived as better. Definately a difference and worth trying, I eat a lot of red meat so it's nice to have the options.
I definately prefer infrared if its just us, but for entertaining I need more space and cook times are different with infrared so I opt for the flame for all.
Bottom line: its a worthwhile option.

Getting back to the original question... Napoleon vs Weber BBQs.

So thanks to the kind folks at BBQ galore and some other shops here's the consensus.

Napoloeon.

3 reasons (based on the Napoleon P500 vs Weber Genesis CEP 310):
- Napoleon finally increased the size of their main cooking rack to 500 sq inches, Weber is 504
- Weber this year is now using 400 grade stainless steel for their searing plates while Napoleon is using 304 grade stainless steel.
- one of the best warranties in the business. 10 years for burners and parts. After that it is a 50/50 split on costs from years 11 to 25.

400 vs 304 is that magnetic test people spoke about on this forum. If the magnet sticks it is using 400 grade.
Another reason and I may be biased here but I like the charcoal accessory tray that you can insert into the Napoleon, pretty neat. I also like the LIFT Ease Roll Top lid, saves space when opening the grill and also some of the heat stays since half the grill is under the lid.

The sales associates for the most part said that for the past 15 or so years they would've said Weber since it had more main rack total cooking space and everything else being equal. This year they will feel Napoleon truly has caught up and gone a bit beyond.

Both are great BBQs, I have neither as I am in the market for one so I guess whatever is on sale first, I'll end up getting that one but all things being equal - Napoleon is probably the one I would select.

Do go on...

Nothing quite so epic as last time. Thought it was a fart, it most certainly was not. Had to clean the wifes car the next day.

The End

I bought a Napoleon Prestige P450 in 2009, and this item will be in service for quite some time I can tell you. Couldn't be happier with it, very well built, 694sq in grill. The magnet test works on almost every surface of mine, inside and out, except the handle bar and thinner vent panel on the face above the doors. Maybe it's all "the good steel" you mention. Weighs a fricken TON, man. In almost every major wind event we have, a neighbour's $80 BBQ blows all over the place. With this thing, no such problem! :D

I had a similar conversation you had with the BBQ Galore dude (Burlington), with me just fishing around for reasons why I may NOT want to go for the domestic item. Net result: very happy with the Nap, do not regret leaving the Weber.

Also, I bought the charcoal tray, and have enjoyed using it maybe once a month in good weather. It is not really the same as a proper coal grill, you know (Weber seems to pretty much own that segment, BTW). The one drawback with it is that it's a bit messy, especially on a breezy day. You must clean it as soon as it's cool, to keep the ash down. Also, because ash may fall down from this tray, through your burner on its way to the cleanout tray, I think it may be responsible for more-frequent burner cleaning, not certain about that tho.

Thanks for making me think about grilling in 25C, I'm oh so happy now.... 8)

Both are good BBQ's, but nothing beats my Vermont Castings unit.

About 10 yrs ago I had the same debate and ended up purchasing a Napoleon. My brother had one and it seemed good and I really liked the fold in hood . Bought it, had it delivered and as the guys were rolling it down the ramp from the truck, the moment the wheels hit the ground the two front ones snapped off.....it's just one of those moments you know, your so excited to get this BBQ you've been mentally cooking on it for a week since you bought it and now it's here. Then BAM. I told them to wheel it back on the truck as I was rejecting this order, much to their dismay.

Back at the store, the story I got was that these were "Chinese" manufactured models in order to get the cost down and when would I like delivery of another one. No thank you, got my refund and promptly fled to order a Weber. Have had it for 10 yrs, great performance, easy to clean. Only complaint is the starter doesn't work so using a lighter to start it up.

This winter was unusual in that I didn't BBQ. Between snow/ice and cold gave it a miss. Well, did one last weekend and opened the doors to the tank and out flew about 10 small birds, I had flashbacks to the movie "The Birds". Anyway, the inside of the lower area looked like a statue in Rome, bird sh*t everywhere. Checked the cooking area and thankfully they stayed out of there so was able to cook. The BBQ has a date with my pressure washer soon.

@AB, mine (and all of Nap's top lines) are the N. American specimens. Mine had Barrie, Ontario, Canada all over the packaging, all materials and assembly are at least Continental - this one.

If you were "having this same debate", you may not have been comparing apples-to-apples. Since Nap makes a lesser line to compete with the Broil Kings and Colemans of the market, as sold in Cajun Tire, and Weber does NOT, I'd say you got crappy sales advice, for starters.

As for the wheels on this bitch, they appear to be industrial grade, no joke. This bbq is an absolute tank, weighs well north of 100lbs.

I’ve had two burners and the drip pan rust to pieces on my 5 year old Napolean. Every time I’ve called them up, they had brand new ones at my door within 4 days – no charge. I just pay shipping.

I find Weber’s have a much more even heat distribution then my Napolean. That’s my only complaint. On my grill, things at the front take longer to cook. I’ve never encountered that problem on a Weber.
