I had never thought about pet insurance, thinking it was a waste of money. One day, about 5 years ago, I saw an ad in Canadian Living to sign your dog up for 1 month free, so I thought, what the heck?
Well, 2 weeks later, my 1 year old Shih Tzu ended up with what I thought was a bladder infection. She had crystals in her urine. She needed a few tests, medication, special food, the whole nine yards!! Because I had signed up for this "1 month free", I received a cheque back for the entire amount (minue a $50 deductible). It was over $750 I believe. So, what were the odds that when I signed up for the free month, something actually happened?
So, after that, we signed her up, and have had no problems with her (of course!). However, the money I saved on that original visit, paid for the insurance for the first 3 years, so it was well worth it.
My girlfriend also signed up after hearing what happened to my dog, and 2 years later, her dog got cancer and she saved so much money in the end. Not everything was covered, but it was like 80% of the treatments or something. There are many levels of plans, so you have to pick what's best for you.
In the end, if you put $25 a month away for the duration of your pets life, you'd probably have enough money saved in case of an emergency, however, this day and age, saving is so tough so that money would get used elsewhere. You also get $500 when you pet passes away. For us, it's a small amount we don't even see each month now - it's like all insurance, it's a "what if" or "just incase" type purchase for peace of mind.
Good luck with your decision. Check out
