My son is playing in a hockey tournament in Buffalo in March. Due to work I will meet them there after his first game.

I googled and found that all my wife needs is a letter from me confirming she can bring my son across the border. We are not divorced and it does not have to be noterised.

I am trying to confirm this on the CBSA website but am having trouble finding it.

Has anyone done this recently and can confirm that all I need to provide is a letter with consent and my contact information?

You absolutely need the letter, and it's strongly recommended to get the letter notarized. Without it they could theoretically hold your son at the border. Here's a link to a gov't site that has a temaplte letter you can use. All you need to do is get it notarized (I went to Furlong collins on Ontario St. - I think it cost about $35 and took less than 5 minutes) by a lawyer or notary public.

My wife also takes our children over the border to shop and she has never been asked for the letter. It is always better to be safe then sorry.

I work at the airport (will not state my employer, but I'm sure you can guess) and it is not a legal requirement, however it is highly recommended when one parent is travelling across the border without the other. Just a letter stating she has your permission to travel, the purpose of the visit and a number where an officer can reach you should the officer want to verify the information.

When your crossing the border get your Rye at the Dute Free The beer too very cheap... you don't want to be stuck drinking American beer!
You probably know this, but I tell ya anyways Jen will need her license and birth certificate, plus birth certificates for all the boys crossing with her. And the letter may not be necessary but good to have in case they start questioning her.
