What is the going rate for babysitting in HV/HVE? (I think when I was younger, it was around $5 an hour.) Has it increased much in the last 10-15 years? |

I always used to say "whatever the homeowner could afford" when i was younger. I never had a "rate". I just let them pay me whatever they thought was reasonable (hey 20 bucks was big money back in the day), but you know how it goes with inflation ... haha |

I think the rate is closer to $12 hr now especially if there are multiple children. |

Well my oldest daughter has just started to babysit in the past 6 months and so far she's averaging about $10 an hour. Mind you more often than not - it always gets rounded up ... and sometimes my husband and I feel that she's been given too much (usually by $5 - $10) ...... but then when we were paying my husband's nephew to babysit our 3 girls when they were younger - even though he was family - we always paid well - and my sister and brother in law always told us we paid him too much - basically since the girls were pretty much self sufficient. But if their watching wee ones, then it's a different story - it's harder work. Jo |

Wow. I think 12$ is insane! hahaaha I'm more into the flat rates (and yes it depends on what age of children you are looking after). If youre babysitting for a couple of hours, then MAYBE 12$ an hour, but that can quickly add up if youre babysitting for 6 hours...and 3 of those hours the children are sleeping anyways. It also depends on what the parents want you to do with the children. If youre going on an outting, or taking them to the park and out to dinner, then that's different then if youre just sitting at home watching movies. I still think it's more appropriate to let the parents judge how much they are going to give you. How times (and rates!) have changed. |

Honestly if your finding babysitting for $5 then your lucky! I think $10-12 is fair. |

I have paid $10/hr for 2 children. A night out to the movies cost me about $70 that's why I never did it again. I think it's very expensive for a sitter, it's better to ask your neighbour, and take turns between a few families. Sometime community living is the cheapest way, and the kids have fun too. |

My girls charge $5.00 an hour, but now the oldest wants to get a part time job so that she can make more money. I think if they are old enough to work elsewhere, minimum wage would be fair but if they are not old enough $5.00 is reasonable. |
