Why are some calls to Mississauga long distance and other calls to like Scarborough local? Can't figure Bell out.

it's the credit ravine... they have wireless over the credit river... so anything on the other side is long distance...

The difference in calling areas is due to something called EAS (extended areas of service).

Not all EAS is two way. Milton can call Scarboro as it is part of Toronto's EAS but Milton cannot call Brampton for example as it's its' own EAS. Every time Bell wanted to expand EAS service (prior to deregulation) they would have to solict everyone within the EAS if they wanted to increase the size of the local calling area (this was due to the fact that the basic telephone rate was based on the number of telephone exchanges that you could call locally - if Bell increased this by adding a new area as local your basic monthly rate got increased).

Can't tell I work in the telecommunications industy can you?

I just changed my phone and internet service from Bell to Primus. Reason being is Bell charges to much. I found that with Primus I'm not saving a huge amount of money I think its around 16$ but I get more calling features that Bell dose not provide me with. The major one is Unlimited Long distance within Canada and the U.S. Seeing that once I move out to Milton we will be long distance from our family and some friends this was something I needed.

I dont think so it will be long distance, i checked with Rogers for my cell phones and they confirmed it wont be long distance calling.

I recall reading somewhere that the cost for Bell (or any other Telco) to maintain the phone network works out to about $2.00 a month. The cost for VOIP service is something in the area of $0.18 a month.

I don’t see how the CRTC could possibly help, as their role effectively blocks competition, and creates regulatory burdens. If you really want to help, write your local MP and demand they abolish the CRTC.

The next best thing you can do as a consumer is to take your business elsewhere. Why people pay Bell $50+ a month for phone service, when you can get it cheaper elsewhere, I’ll never understand. High prices are never the result of greed. They are caused by people willing to pay them.

So if I had Bell when moving to Milton calling Brampton would be long distance?


Calling Brampton from Milton with BELL is long distance. Going by my last phone bill, its dead expensive too. Im looking for an alternative provider.


Try Primus. They have unlimited long distance within Canada and U.S. I switched from Bell to them.
