This proposal has been on the books for decades, and it based on common sense...there's no way Milton can service that land for development, so why not have it annexed to Mississauga and make some money off of the deal? |

from the Oakville Beaver: However, a separate proposed memorandum of understanding between Mississauga, Milton, and Peel and Halton Regions, states the communities plan to examine the movement of Mississauga’s western boundary over to Highway 407 from its current alignment with Ninth Line. This would mean Mississauga would essentially annex Milton’s property between Ninth Line and the 407, between Highways 401 to the north and 403 to the south. That proposed plan was presented to Mississauga and Halton politicians Wednesday. Mississauga council’s general committee recommended going forward with the proposal while Halton regional council’s planning committee recommended deferring consideration until its next meeting. According to staff reports, Mississauga and Peel would be required to pay Milton and Halton money to make up for lost future tax revenue as part of that boundary shift, with figures still to be determined. Mississauga staff would lead the restructuring proposal, if the communities agree to the idea, and all four municipalities would have to sign off on the boundary move at a future date. |

oh sorry.. i wasn't attempting to answer your question, i just found the initial post a little vague as to the boundary changes being proposed and thought that article gave a bit more info. personally i don't think it's a question of whether milton can service the land between 9th line and the 407, it's more about when. Mississauga is already developed right to 9th line, so they would be ready to develop the subject land in the next few years. whereas milton is probably at least a decade away from servicing those lands for development. maybe the town of Milton is looking at cashing in now instead of 10 yrs (or more) down the line? anyway, this is all just theory on my part though, i really have know idea what the real reason behind the deal would be, or whether it would beneficial for milton to take the deal... |

Hi Mars dad and other posters Vistaway is right, this issue has been around for at least a decade when the section of Highway #407 between #401 and # 403 was built. The reason why Milton and Halton cannot service this area is it is over 10 km. away from any existing and planned water and waste water plants and pipes, which for this small sliver of land that is only 300 metres wide at its widest point makes no sense in servicing, as not even the major builders in the area are interested in it. Currently there is no plans in the 10 year Regional capital budget to service this area, and the entire area is zoned A1 Agricultural which only allows existing farms and detached homes that area located there. This area was under discussion in 1997 when I was last on council when Mississauga made similar approachs to Milton and Halton as the #407 was being built. Mississauga did not even want to go as far as the proposed memorandum of understanding at that time and the proposal died. Since then the City of Mississauga has bought almost 300 acres of land from the Provincial Ministry of Government Services and the Ontario Realty Corporation which owned most of the land in the former provincial " Greenbelt Area" within the Town of Milton for future parkland and stormwater ponds to serve the Lisgar community east of Ninth Line. The problem is not only changing the municipal boundaries between Milton and Mississauga, but also the regional boundaries between Halton and Peel which would take an act of provincial parliment to resolve.
