Post subject:  HUGE Snowy Owl in Coates Park!!

I was walking my dog this morning around 8:30 and saw a giant lump of snow in the otherwise snowless grass, as I got closer the lump turned it's head to watch me. My god, it was the most beautiful bird.

We took a wide berth but it flew off to sit on one of the light posts on the west side of the park. It had to have had a wingspan of at least 3-4 feet.

The warmer weather must make for prime hunting.

I've been chasing these snowy sightings all over the GTA (somewhat of a bird enthusiast)... still haven't been lucky enough to see one

very cool!

we saw one near my parents farm (west of london) a few weeks ago... it was gorgeous!

digijay - I think they still have one at mountsberg birds of prey exhibit (they rehabilitate injured birds)

but i know it's not the same as seeing one in the wild..

The owl might be hanging around, last week my dog sniffed out a mostly eaten rabbit on the little roadway to the union gas station along the southern boundary of the park.

So you might see him yet, digijay.

I am wondering... where exactly is Coates Park? Are you referring to what's formally known as 'Coates Neighborhood Park' around Main and Thomson?

Please let me know. I have been trying to look for one to photograph... in vain.

We had this one land on our wreath on Christmas Eve... Not a Snowy Owl, but thought it was pretty cool!

That is so awesome. Owls are beautiful. I've never seen a snowy owl up close, either.

On the other hand, I have a nest of pigeons that's taken up residence on my roof just above my door. They make a pretty terrible mess, but I haven't the heart to get rid of them. I figure they need a home too and we probably displaced them with the neighbourhood building. One of their babies fell out of the nest and died this summer, on my driveway. I talk to the silly things and tell them how disgusting their mess is on occasion (uh, yeah, talking to a bird... hahaha), but other than that I think we have a pretty amicable relationship. :D

It's on Philbrook just off of Yates. South of Derry, west of Thompson

I found a snowy yesterday that has been spotted several times over the last few weeks around Hurontario and 401 in Mississauga.. unfortunately it was a bit far away (on top of a building) to get a good shot, even with a decent zoom.

I hope some of the people on this board that feel having their dog kill wild animals is cute or entertaining don't find the location of these birds. They would probably see it as cute when one ends up in their dogs mouth.

The pics of the owl on the wreath are awesome! It's hard to believe it would be so bold.

I live around the corner from Coates Park. From the look of the dead bunny my kids found on our street on the way home from school this afternoon I would say that owl can take care of himself quite well Ewww
