I'm sure there's many reasons, some of, but not limited to:

- Give you depth enough to park a car
- Install a water shutoff vale
- Keep things all nice and neat with the rest of the street

ps. Its the Town of Milton (population 80,000 and counting)and will be for a long time similar to the Town of Oakville (population 180,000)and Town of Markham (population 280,000).
