Hi Everyone

Much like many others in HVE, we have a driveway that "almost" fits both of our cars. We have a large mini van and a full size car and if I squeeze them both into our driveway I can get all 8 tires on the driveway but the back end of the car sticks out a few feet into the road. I was wondering if anyone knew what the rule is for that? Can the car protrude a bit so long as all 4 tires are in the driveway?

No, any overhang breaks the law, it makes no difference where the tires are.

If only one of my vehicles were a foot or so shorter, or the driveway a foot or so longer....if there's one thing I dislike most about these new developments it is the small driveways.

Not much point having a great big new houses if all you can park there is a mini cooper...lol

Just make sure you don't live on ppst99's street and you should be okay.

Mine was tolerated for over 2 years. Cars parked overnight would get ticketed and mine wouldn't even though it was overhanging...until someone started complaining and calling the city non stop. That's the reason the city gave me for the no ticketing for 2+ years...no one complained so even though officers would ticket vehicles parked overnight, the overhanging (also had eight tires in the driveway) was tolerated.

If it's borderline keep parking it that way until you are notified via a $30 fine that it won't cut it. Most neighbors (if you are lucky enough) understand the issues we deal with and as long as it's not an obvious back wheel in the street or blocking all the sidewalk, will leave you alone. Those who don't will call the city to complain. It's there right so adjust at that point.

I dont have a problem with a car bumper overhanging on the sidewalk and I agree, the driveways for the most part, are too short.

My complaint about cars and sidewalks are when pick up trucks are parked in a driveway and they have ladders, wood or other items sticking out the back blocking part of the sidewalk.

I would not call and complain about a bumper, but would definately call about what I just outlined.

I probably wouldn't call, but I'd be highly annoyed if I was pushing a stroller and had to in any way move off the side walk to get around a car. I would imagine that it would be pretty irritating also for someone in a wheel chair to go down the sidewalk and have to leave the sidewalk because a car is impeding.

It is frustrating that the driveway doesn't accommodate your needs, but are you also using your garage?

We're lucky that our current place can handle 2 reasonably sized cars, but we also do not have a side walk. Our garage is full of crapola, but if we had a sidewalk, we'd have to suck it up and use it.

My brother in Vaughan has a sidewalk, and in his 2 car garage driveway can still hold 4 cars comfortably.. very jealous..

Hi Devious....I should qualify a little. My wife, was walking our dog, accidentially left her glasses at home. While walking the dog, she walked right into someone's ladder hanging out of the pick up.

Sure, you could make a claim that my wife should be watching where she was going, but at the same time, if the guy uses his garage for storage and purposely parks his vehicle that way, his fault...People should just be more curtious of others.

I would completely call parking services on this person.. that is my imho, but you shouldn't be letting your ladder hang over the sidewalk.. thats just rude!

We don't have a sidewalk on our side, so we aren't blocking that. I guess I will just see how it goes and hope it doesn't offend my neighbours at all. I would love to be able to use my garage for storage since we have quite a bit of stuff.
