So did anyone else get the letter from the cops slipped on the door?

"Over the past 8 months in your area alone 15 cars have been stolen. Locked, unlocked and alarmed vehicles have all been targeted. It would appear that specific vehicle makes are being targeted namely, Honda's, Acura's, VW's and Nissan's"

I know my two neighbors got their cars broken into (I think they left the doors unlocked) and read about a stolen car incident sometime back on the forum but did not realize it was this bad.
I am interested in knowing if people in other phases got similar letters, I am in phase 14.

I moved to Milton and my insurance dropped, can only imagine what will happen next time I renew. <sigh>
Keep your eyes open and call 911 if you notice anything suspicious as it is occurring.

I'm 14B and we got a letter too. Gone are the Milton days when we didn't worry about locking our cars (or homes for that matter) :( We'll definitly be more aware now.

Hmmm, not good. Both cars I own are among the makes you listed. Is Phase 14B in the Holly/Derry area?

None of my neighbours lock anything either I've noticed, and since I grew up in Toronto, I can and will never understood why. I lock my front door even if it takes two minutes for me to walk into the backyard to get something and come back.

With todays keyless remotes and what not, I find it hard to understand why one would not lock their cars doors

Is it actually considered "breaking in" to a car if it is left open with items on display? That sounds like opportunistic theft as opposed to a "break in".

Ya it's still "breaking into".
It refers more to breaking the perimeter as opposed to physically causing damage.

I just meant that growing up in Milton (long before phase 1 Mattamy) it was such a small town, we didn't worry about locking everything. As population growns so does crime...fact of life.

15 cars from a population of over 80,000 doesn't seem that bad to me. That's equivalent to 562.5 cars for Toronto's 3,000,000 population.

I always lock my car and house. It's just a habit.

Not 15 cars out of 80,000. More like 15 cars out of about 200 homes (average 5 per house =1000 people), the letter was dropped only at 14B doors. I took a quick drive around.

If 45,000 cars were stolen from Toronto in 8 months, I would be alarmed.

When the police take the time to drop off notes, it's a little concerning!

My bad. I missed that "in your area alone" part. Damn, that is quite a bit of theft. I wonder how many of those 15 were returned to their owners eventually?

I highly doubt any of them were returned, seems like they are targeting certain brands. This means it is likely a professional operation. Sounds like they are going to a cut shop, probably sold as parts or reassembled with new VIN # then resold.
If you own these brands better park in your Garage, they will not enter your Garage cause it makes to much noise.

If car is stolen here it might be ending up at another continent.
"Of 159,000 vehicles reported stolen in Canada in 2006, about 30,000 were big-ticket, luxury cars – Hummers, Mercedes-Benz and Silverados – hotwired off the street and into a container bound for Africa or eastern Europe."

"CARS, TRUCKS and heavy equipment stolen from Ontario have been seen – sometimes still with Ontario licence plates – in Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Bosnia, Croatia, the Netherlands, China, Thailand, and across Africa and the Middle East."

having spent some time in africa, you would be surprised how many car dealerships in Ghana and other countries have ontario plates.

My parents had their Toyota Matrix stolen outside of their work about two years ago. The insurance company explained that some cars are more desirable because their parts are easily transferable or sold. Thankfully because of that the insurance company was fast(er) to settle.
