What an uninformed comment. School's should not be named after people? I went to a number of schools that were named after people....Cassandra, Senator'Oconnor, George S. Henry....and I can name a number of others....Norman Bethune, Leacock, Sandford Flemming, JM Denier, EC Drury, Henry Carr, Michael Power, AY Jackson, Albert Campbell....What a great way to recognize someone's contributions to a community/town/city...etc...you say that if you had lots of money, you would donate....it's not at all about how much you can donate.....why not consider volunteering at the hospital or elderly care facilities, volunteer for council or for your PTA......a name has nothing to do with the education that a child will receive at the school.
If y ou want your voice to be heard, then get involved at the community level of town council. I highly doubt that the person in question actively campaigned for a school to be named after them, the name was nominated and the people who selected the name did so for many reasons.
At the end of the day....build a bridge and cross it.....how is this really going to impact you or the kid's who will be attending the school?

Can't we let this die already? It's done - the school is named. Most people are supportive (or it doesn't matter to them).

Bottom line, this is a public school to which we all pay huge taxes for. A school should not be named after an INDIVIDUAL no matter who or what he has done, for THOUSANDS of people are involved. Name the school after an area where it is located in the community not after a PERSON. The town knew how much commotion this would cause and I know there must be underlying reasons why an INDIVIDUAL gets awarded a school after themselves. If I had lots of money I would do more for the town in which I live but dont need or want a school named after me. Not sure why the town would do something like this to stir a huge pot, they should be more politically correct to appeal to the TAXPAYERS. Many huge contributers to the town, why vote 1, this is not the OSCARS it is a community. COATES CROSSING would never stir a debate and on with our lives, no one person deserves the name on a public school unless he donated so much to get it buit and bear his name for reconition, hmmmmmm why would anyone want all this attention?? BIGGER PICTURE???

I totally agree hence I think Paris should be renamed since we now have
Paris Hilton.
:P

Hazel McCallion PS, Roberta Bondar PS, Rick Hanson SS...all in Mississauga and schools named after good individuals. Perhaps I'm wrong but I can't help but think after hearing all the backlash on this new school's name that this has something to do with race. Would there be all this debate if the school were name Colin Best PS or Gord Krantz PS, etc? Please tell me I'm wrong here because I can't help but keep thinking this is part of the issue.

fixkarma what colour is you skin ? because unless it yellow you won't be the majority around the Gta. I am offended by your statement as a whiteman . My dislike for the name of the school has nothing to do with race I just think its a silly name. T.J.Signh Elementry School Would have been better in my opinion, but the trustes didnt ask our opinion. And thats not beating around the bush.

STOP BEATING AROUND THE BUSH and show some decency and tell the truth that you can't stand to say a coloured man's name as your child's school!!!

Perhaps it's at the subconscious level, but I think that's what it boils down to. Though I'm no psychologist. :)

So 37 percent will be white people, the next largest group will be south asians at 28 percent is there something wrong with my math because 37 is still higher than 28. If you add all the minorities together then we become a minority but thats like saying ford sells more cars in total then honda sells civics. Yes its the word Tiger that I find silly. Its the same as if they name the new high school Harman Rab High school instead of David James Elliot High school.
