Post subject:  Apple itouch/iphone help

Hi,

We have an iphone and itouch in the house. A few days ago i hooked them up to the wi-fi in the house (cogeco cable using a wireless G Linksys router) to surf the web, etc.... was running smoothly.

All day today I can't connect to the web/internet with the apple devices.. I reset the cable modem, router, etc... check my settings on the Apple device and all seems well until I ty to reach the internet.

My laptop and Desktop that use the wireless router hit the internet but not my apple devices...any suggestions out there?

The wireless router is secured and the keys/passwords were entered and re-entered in the Apple device....doesn"t seem like I am connecting to my wifi connection....try connecting to an unsecured neighbour connection and that does not work.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated....Dale

did you try and re-boot your iPhone?

if you want to do a "hard" boot hold down the home and lock button for about 5 seconds. The wait 30sec and turn it back on.

Also, did you add new security to your router, maybe you turned on MAC address authentication? You will have to add all your MAC address to your router if that is the case....

I was having a hard time resisting posting that comment as well. I would agree that apple products statistically have less issues.

Like the above post suggested try deleting your connection in the itouch and re-setting it up , whats your network secured with WPA/WEP/WPA-2.

Just because a router is unsecured doesnt mean you can just get on the internet, could just have mac filtering enabled If your sure the router settings havent changed, check for a firmeware upgrade on the router, try assigning a static IP to your router for one of the devices and try that. Have you bought any other new electronic devices recently ?

Also can you just not hit the net, or the net and your lan, Im not even sure if your iphone will let you do this but if you can try browsing to one of your computers network shares and see if its only getting blocked denied at the internet level

There is no built-in SMB client on these things. You could download a free app called "Network Ping Lite" and try using that to ping machines on your LAN or the router itself.

I haven't seen it mentioned whether you've got the Wifi indicator showing up (in place of 3G in the top left on the iPhone for example). If you have this but are unable to surf, then your router is accepting the connection but not allowing access to the internet (so the problem is on the router). On the other hand if you don't have the Wifi indicator, your iPhone is unable to connect to the router and so the problem is on your iPhone and it needs to be reconfigured.

can't figure my way around the router to know the settings or even change them. I have fiddled on the apple devices to no avail...reset the devices, tried to change networks...i know the router is the issue.

All my portable devices iphone/itouch and wii wi-fi do not connect to the router....but my laptop and desktop do....

$40 to the person who comes in and solves the issue? any takers? send me a pm if your up to the challenge.

my router is a Linksys Wireles G 2.4 ghz router model wrt54g

Dale.

There's where you went wrong! You should have spent 200 dollars on this:

http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/

Then everything would "just work"

Does the iPhone/iTouch show it as being connected, or will it keep denying the password you input?

If you go to settings->network->Wi-Fi and then click the blue ">" next to your network, does it show you an IP, Router and DNS information?

What are they?

If you get something like 192.168.x.x for "Router", open up safari and type in: http:// and then the IP for the router.

For example, my router is 192.168.1.1, so I would type in http://192.168.1.1
Does a page come up, or ask you to login?

...If that seems to work, can you try http://74.125.95.106

Thanks William for stopping by and helping me out. All is working well.

As suggested on the thread we accessed the router with that IP address which allowed us (i.e. William) to diagnose the issue, download updated firmware, reset somethings, etc...

Appreciate all the responses....Dale
