Post subject:  New Home Lawn Care

We just moved into our maintstreet detached home this past Oct, new sod was laid in Nov... now I'm not 100% sure if it's been rooted or not, but there are still very visable seams between the patches.. what would I need to do to start off the season properly with my lawn? I'm a complete noob when it comes to gardening etc...

also debating on a reel mower vs, gas/eletric rotary... our lot isn't that big.. maybe 25'x25'

also, is Mattamy responsible for anything in terms of initial start up? (ie. fertilize, fix up patches that weren't laid properly etc...)

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Fit,

I just bought a reel mower from Canadian Tire by Yardworks for $99. It is only 14" wide but I was thinking that our front lawn is really small and this should do the trick. I know you have a bit more lawn and sides to do for your home but I still think that it should do the trick plus it is great for the environment being a green product and all.

I can't tell you if Mattamy will do any fix ups but I plan to put something like that on my year end since it is coming up in May. Last summer Mattamy removed a post out of the front lawnn of my neighbours front lawn up by my porch and they left the hole unfilled. It is an eye sore and they didn't cover it with any grass even after I asked. I plan to put it on my year end as well because I want it addressed.

I plan to purchase some fertilizer and some grass seeds and spread that over the lawn and start up that watering so that it will grow and nice shade of green.

Hey Andrea,

hope all is well, wow, 1 year already.. time flies eh???

I'm most likely going to get a reel mower, but the one I was looking at was closer to $300  ... supposed to be the latest and greatest, and it has settings that can cut the grass higher... anyhoo, I'm more concerned on if Mattamy will be doing anything to the lawns any further... like are they going to patch up spots they see unfit on their own? are they planting trees etc... etc...

I figure people that have moved in well before us may know

Fitdiculous if you let your grass grow I little higher ( about 3 inches) you should see seeds that grow on the top just cut your grass once it has some seeds growing up top and leave the clipping on top off your grass (mulch) The seeds will reseed it self and your spaces should fill in.

If you want to reseed, I suggest going to Vanbeeks

http://www.vanbeeks.com

They are very informative they will tell you what kind of grass will grow best in your yard ie: they have grass that will grow in shaded area's like between the house's (where Mattamy's grass does not grow). They will guide you to the best grass for your condition, you can buy the seeds there, they have bins you just fill your bag with the amount you want. Kinda like the bulk barn.

Thanks for the info... I'm not looking to reseed, just fertilize... and fuinny enough the grass on the side of my house where it's pretty much always shaded is growing quite a bit quicker than the non-shaded areas...
