They are actually quite good! i have never had one come to my home but at a school staff meeting last year the principal got a volunteer police officer working for Crime Stoppers that did this type of thing come in and talk to the teachers giving them tips too. Now i wasnt really listening i think that it was during report cards  but at the time i remember thinking that he was giving good tips.
