Having the laundry upstairs is the best----With the door closed you can not hear it running

What noise???? Where and tear on the joist??? This is not a problem for us at all. The only noise we hear is the buttons of jeans clicking in the dryer which you hear anyways... No washer or dryer noise, and I hardly can see stress on the joist. If there was stress on the joist, are your tiles and grout cracking??? no......

Where do you take your clothes off? For most people it is upstairs in your bedroom. Having the laundry upstairs is great since you are not carrying the laundry up and down the stairs. It stays on one floor, and you are not running around naked looking for clothes in the morning!

I would not worry so much about the laundry being upstairs or downstairs, I would be more concerned about do I need the office? The need for an office would be my deciding factor, if you need it, I would put it upstairs, if you do not need one, I would keep the laundry room upstairs.

If you have the laundry upstairs, you can always move it to the basement later and rewire the hydro from your panel and tap in to the water from the basement. It would be easier to move it downstairs later, then to move it upstairs later and have to get the water and drainage all installed upstairs.

Main floor or Basment for sure. You spend most of you time on the main floor. We had a flood on the main floor where the water came into the basement as well as under the kitchen wall. Mattamy had left the cap on the pipe and it wasn't glued. So during the rinse cycle all 25+ liters of wall had nowhere to go.

Think about having that on the 2nd floor. No thank you!

have it upstairs and love it... also makes a great place to keep cleaning supplies, central vac hose etc. wouldn't want it anywhere else. the space seems small for an office anyways....

We have ours upstairs as well and love it. When purchasing the house we looked at 2 of the exact same model but one had moved the laundry to the basement and the other kept it upstairs.....was one of the deciding factors so keep that it mind if your plan is to resell quickly.

Until I get a TV in the 2nd floor laundry room, She, I or the kids fold the clothes downstairs...

My vote is for the 2nd Floor FOR SURE.....It's convenient, convenient, convenient!!!

We currently have a 2nd floor laundry and when we move, it will be on the main floor. I am dreading this simply because I love that when it's a Saturday morning and everyone is having a lazy morning, lounging around upstairs, I can throw a load of washing in and not miss out on our Saturday morning family hang out. LOVE IT and am going to miss it TREMENDOUSLY!! (Although the main floor Laundry in my opinion is STILL better then the basement!)

2nd Floor Laundry definetely gets our vote!

Though, there have been valid points about spending all your time on the main floor, but you aren't spending any time in the basement (especially not at first when it's unfinished!).

And now, you have to lug your clothes up and down 2 flight of stairs!!

The 2nd floor laundry is the BEST thing we ever invested in (we upgraded our model to include a 2nd floor laundry).

We don't notice it being too loud, nor would we have it any other way!

Your clothes come from the bedrooms, why not put your laundry where the bedrooms are?

I don't hear much noise either...my room is away from the laundry & I'm a heavy sleeper.

One thing that PaulB did mention is that you could always pop a couple holes in the dry wall here and there and snake a tube down for spray foam to create a sound barrier on the inside walls which are not insulated.
