Post subject:  Milton and surroundings (photos)
This post is inspired by Milton Photography Hangout
I never participate those, but I’m spending a lot of time with family around Milton.

It always surprising me, how often I see just a few people in local conservation areas, especially in winter.
So, I would like to share some pictures here and I want to ask everyone who likes to share their pictures to post them more often at this forum.

I hope more people will realize how nice it is to spend weekend or just an evening after work in local parks and other places around Milton.

This is picture from yesterday. Uncle Scotty strawberry fields at Appleby road. They are open. It is five minutes from HVE.

Hi, I went though the same decision as a beginner last December and wasn’t listening enough of our local experienced people like Zeeshan Hamid. I whish I could listen to him more carefully.

What is going to be your main objects for photography?
Where?
And budget.

A good starter one is the Canon Rebel XSi or whatever the letter is at now. I have that one and it takes beautiful pics for around $700. You need a flash for around $400 as well.

I don't really have a main object, I enjoy taking portrait pictures, as well as landscapes. I think I'm thinking somewhere between $300-700 and I know that's on the cheap end of cameras right now, but I can't really justify spending over a grand on a hobby - at this point anyways, who knows about the future though! But for now I just want something that takes great photos, with good user friendly settings. I have no problem learning about my camera but I don't want to have to take a photography class in order to know how to use it! (although I do plan on taking a course in the future)

Those are two common objects with different specifics for each own.
Classic landscape photos are made with WA (wide angle lens) – something like 10-22 mm on consumer and semi-pro level cameras and 17-40 on pro level cameras.
The difference between consumer and pro level cameras is big, unfortunately on landscape and portrait photos. Not because pro cameras have fancy buttons and better build bodies but mostly because they have bigger sensor. Big sensor for capturing of light means more details, better contrast, colors and much less digital noise. Where are some WA lenses for consumer cameras, but they are expensive.
Consumer cameras would takes good portraits again if they have good lens attached.
In opposite to landscape photography, portrait picture better to be taken through the lens with focus distance from 75 to 200 which is totally different from landscape WA lens.
But in consumer cameras it would be good starting from 50 mm. In Canon world in means Canon 50 1.8 II lens which is only 90-110 CAD at local market. 1.8 means it could open diaphragm very wide and capture more light in low light conditions.
But for acceptable portraits you still need more lights. It means – external flash. 400 CAD price which was mentioned here is for Canon flashlights. But where are plenty of alternative manufacturers from China who would sell their products on e-bay and deliver for free to Canada. Those flashes are not so perfectly build, but you can get them for 120-130 CAD. I’m using them and they are not bad at all.
This picture was taken with those cheap flashlights. Well, I used two of them.

Canon 5D, those are the best affordable pro level cameras for still photography. They are not in production for last two years. But they are build to last for very long time. I regret I didn’t went this way.
But they are expensive. 900CAD for body only. 50 1.8 lens for 100 CAD and flashlight for 130. Way too expensive to your budget.

Alternative? Used Canon 40D for 600 CAD with cheap 18-55 EF-S IS lens. You could find one used locally for 600 and 130 CAD for flash light would get you going. Add 50 1.8 II lens after skipping couple of visits to LCBO.

For 600USD you could also get new, never used Canon 500D with same 18-55 EF-S IS lens, if you are willing to pickup one across the border. People are getting them as presents periodically and selling it never used.

Or locally it would be Canon 450D which is previous generation.
I think 450D are still available at retail stores for reasonable price as well with same kit lens I mentioned above.
