The pond behind our backyard is getting really full. I hope they have proper drainage to the creek or something cuz this is scary! And the rain doesn't seem to let up. :x

You can speak to John in engineering (905-878-7252 ext 2500) who can bring up each particular storm water management pond in Milton. But when I asked a similar question before I was told each pond has a release mechanism in place, whether it's creek running by or in I think the one by your house an underground release that will feed the water elsewhere.

They are not supposed to be able to overflow.

In case of an extreme emergency, the water I believe gets diverted to Prickly Pete's basement which serves as a 'holding area' for excess overflow.

LOL ... good one :) Prickly Pete should definitely be elected as a Mayor for allowing his basement as a holding tank :) That's community service!!!

Actually he's doing that so he can list "indoor swimming pool" to boost the price up when he puts his home up for sale :)

Thanks Rick! I will probably keep that number close by. I would also want the town to carry out regular inspections to ensure the underground pipes are not clogged. I can actually see a vortex in the middle of the pond so I'm assuming the "draining mechanism" works but the pond on the other side of Yates is also getting pretty full. I guess that leads the water to the creek.

The levy between our two ponds actually gave in and started to erode on the top. One more rainy session like this and Geoscape can start backfilling the levy.

Pete: I like your idea but only if you supply the buckets!!!

Well, after the "flowerfest" Mattamy organized 2 weeks ago for sure we don't have to water anything!

Rain stopped!!! URGHH!!!! I was so excited, the pond had filled up so much I could almost launch my boat in it from the backyard, but now it's all draining back into Pete's basement! :x

I have seen the ponds get pumped out in the spring. They pump the water onto the roads and they go down into the storm sewers (Which I thought went back to the ponds)

Mikefc: you can probably launch your boat in a few minutes

Conservation Halton issued a High Water Safety Bulletin as of 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28.

The region has experienced periods of intense rainfall this morning, ranging from 20 mm to 45 mm. While the majority of this weather system has now passed out of the watershed area, an additional 5 to10 mm in scattered showers and possible thunderstorm activity is expected throughout the remainder of the day.

As such, the soil conditions in the region are saturated and the creeks have responded to the rainfall with higher than normal flows with streams rising to bankful levels. High water levels are anticipated to persist over the remainder of the day.

Please be aware creek banks will be slippery and soft and should be avoided during this period. All persons are advised to use extreme caution around bodies of water and stay well back of stream banks. Please alert children of these dangers.

Conservation Halton will continue to monitor stream and weather conditions. This High Water Safety Bulletin will be in effect through to Wednesday September 29.

We've lived beside those stormwater ponds off of Yates for 2 and a half years and they've never once came close to overflowing, athough they've freaked me out a couple times. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. They're engineered to retain and carry water away, right?

Rrrrright....
And then you hear the story about a house sunk in beside a lake because the drain pipe was clogged.
Too bad I'm already freaking out. What's going to happen if we have a snowy winter and it starts melting!!!
I would also hope that this Conservation Halton does monitor the water levels very closely.

I just called Conservation Halton and told them to turn off Sixteen Mile Creek for a couple hours.

I'm assuming you live in the houses built on Yates right in front of the ponds? I honestly doubt that they'd build houses that close to stormwater management facilites if there was ever a chance that it would cause damage on that scale.

If you plan on living there for a long time, you're going to be one very stressed out person, lol :D
