 Post subject: HDMI cable
PostPosted: Wed Sep 29, 2010 8:25 pm
Just curious if it really makes a difference in picture quality if I buy a cheapy $16 HDMI cable from Walmart or the $60+ cable you find at electronics stores? I need to get a new one and want to know if it's worth paying the extra money or are all HDMI cables really the same? Thanks.

Depends on what you're using it for. Cogeco box to TV. DVD/BluRay to TV. Bell?

Bell. Don't have their HD package at the moment and watch DVD sometimes. Don't play video games.

I can get cables cheap locally, if we have enough people who want them. I got $15 (plus taxes) for 10ft triple shielded from IO Gear. I just have to order a few hundred dollars of gear in order to order from them.

Apart from that - Monoprice is awesome...

HDMI is HDMI. The old days of the cable causing interference are gone. I've yet to see a difference on a "high end" cable versus a normal one.

CBC Marketplace did a show on that issue a couple of years ago. They electronically tested Monster cable, rocketfish? and a very cheap chinese knockoff. They found no perceptible difference in picture quality or sound and signal strength. I buy all my HDMIs off EBAY and they are exactly the same quality as Monster (Which I foolishly bought) but are longer cords and 1/10 the price!!

Monster Cable's entire bsiness model is to be the cable at futureshop beside the TVs. When the consumer ask the sales dude "What else do I need to make this puppy work", they drop the monster cable on them, and many times, the consumer doesn't know any better.

I got a decent Sharp one at Costco once too.

HDMI cables are a huge scam, just like prebuilt computers.

the 5$ cable is just as good as the 150$ one. may not be as pretty or well protected but it does the same.

I have a cheap one and I think its the reason why my volume goes up and down while I play my PS3, I'm guessing because I don't believe I noticed that prior maybe there is a difference

Gotta be something else... Does it do it during bluray movies?

I use monoprice as well.

3 weeks ago I was at Leon's and was looking at TV's.

I told the guy I was not interested in 240mhz since I hear the picture is crappy. He told me that you are using the wrong HDMI cable. There are different speeds or throught puts of HDMI cables. 10 Gigabit I thought was standard but he told me there is faster ones (and showed me) that can accomodate the 240mhz speed.
Soooo, is this BS or can someone comment on the different speeds in relation to price?

Thanks
Matt
