Post subject:  COYOTE WATCH

About 6:00 pm today, while eating dinner, we viewed from the kitchen deck an animal that my wife swears was a wolf. I am think it was a very large coyote or coyote dog cross. It had a short bushy tail, light brown colour and the fierce looking slanted eyes and a wolf looking head. Trotting along slowly behind the houses in the green space behind east Jelinik Terrace almost in our backyard travelling west.

Has anybody else seen something like this? Or too much holiday cheer?

There are lots of coyotes living in the Milton area. Milton has gone from countryside to subdivisions too quickly for them to be pushed further out. I saw one dead on Britannia and 8th line not too long ago. Thats why so many cats go missing in this area. The coyotes treat them as a easy meal.

North of Pringle. Two doors down (closer to Pringle) they have a very small dog they let run unleashed in the Green area behind the houses. Wouldn't be surprised if it was gone one day. The coyote stood looking at that house for a couple of moments!

Wow, its a cross-breed of Coyote and Wolf. The article states it has been harassing the Durham region,

This is interesting, since Wolves are more aggressive and Coyotes are not afraid of humans.....I guess we have to be careful and notify animal control immediately if one is sighted.

Definately this was not a plain coyote - I have seen plenty of them in the past for the most part grey colour. This was much bigger especially the head. My son-in-law sent me a National Geographic article that calls them "canids" or "coywolfs", a cross between Western coyotes and Eastern wolves. This is the animal that killed a hiker last fall in Cape Breton. Apparently the coyotes are native to the West but emigrated in the 1920's when crops were bad in Western Canada and then gained a foothold in the Eastern part of the country.

WOW. Pretty scary.

However, they are no match for the speeders on Scott Blvd., Pringle Ave or any other side road in HVE area.

Give it time and we will hear about someone running one of these things down and is now looking for a place to repair a "pimped-out" honda civic or acura with coyote or coywolf? damage.

I'd love to see one!

Where and when are you guys usually spotting them? I'd love to go out and snap some pics - from a safe distance, of course.
