Post subject:  Computer guy that does house calls

I have used the blog to find other services and found Gary Hannah the Hawthorne Handyman and Greg @ Phand for Garage door openers. On both occasions the recommendations of fellow residents of Hawthorne Village led me to 2 great referrals.

Now I am looking for someone to help me with some computer / electronic installations.

Therefore, my question is > Does anyone know a computer guy that does house calls?
Chris @ Crave systems on Main St is fantastic if you want to take your system apart and bring it to him but he doesn't do house calls.
Best Buy's Geek Squad is $175 to fix one problem and add on from there.
Anthony @ Complete Audio on Steeles does house calls but $90 hr seems very expensive.

I need assistance > in home at a reasonable price. Nothing to complicated

I would like to find some reasonably priced assistance in changing my modem from G to N etc.

Standing by for some referrals
Thanks in advance
Casey

I'm actually kind of stuck in a similar problem. Is it possible to add a wireless N router to a G network? I've tried doing it but it seems to cause my connection to go on and off really fast.

Is your G router connection set as default? If so, your N connection will go on and off, because as soon as your computer/laptop detects G router, it will switch over, and once it looses connection, it will switch over to N connection.

You might want to set N router as your default connection, and try again.

I have a similar setup at home, but I have turned off wireless connection on my G router, and am only using it as a hub rather than a wireless router.

You mean changing your G router to N router? I don't think you should have any issues. Just unplug your G router, and plug your N router. It should pickup the internet connection. What router did you buy? Post back your model number, and I'll try to dig some info on the setup of that router and post back. It should be pretty straight forward.

I purchased the apple airport express so that I could send tunes to my stereo and in setting it up it gave me the option to connect it via ethernet and to join and extend my existing wireless network. But it obviously doesnt work. Whats the range on an N network? Does it go farther than a G or is it just faster?

Hi Casey,

We do On-Site IT work. For residential visits I sometimes need to schedule them either early morning, or evening (or on a Saturday etc.) just with our schedule here, but we can certainly help if you'd like. If you've already purchased an N Router and just need help configuring it we can probably even do that here for you saving you a lot of $. If you need to purchase an N Router still we'll set it up for you here (w/ Security etc.) at no extra charge, so that all you have to do is plug it in and go. Either we you're welcome to call or E-Mail me if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.

Casey, contact Dave:

I've used him for 2 seperate issues that I couldn't figure out and he fixed me right up. He's friendly, quick, and reasonably priced. He took my computers away for about 2 days, but he very well may do house calls if you ask him.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for the referral and kind words big_mac.

I do house calls all the time, and actually, that is the majority of the work I do. I also offer to pick up the computer and drop it back off it works better for you, as some families prefer to not have someone come in their home.

If you'd like to send me an email or give me a call, I'd be happy to help you out. I have MANY local referrals and references from families here in Milton. I live in HV.
