Hi all, just trying to take a sampling of hockey fans to settle a friendly debate amongst a group of buddies...
(although I'm a basketball fan, this hockey debate came up and I can't ignore it :) )

Team Canada 2010 vs any NHL All Star team of your choice from the past 20-25 yrs.

Please vote and provide supporting comments if you like :)

Loser in our group buys beers, so please don't 'prickly-pete' this poll by choosing the opposite of what you think just for fun! hehe

The wording of your options sway the answers to fall under option 1.

Nothing in sports is absolute, so instead of wording "everytime, with ease", you might change it to who would win a 7 game series, or which team over the long haul of a season is better, or something like that. Even the greatest all time teams never go completely undefeated.

So based on my improved voting options, I'd go with the 2010 Olympic team.

also, www.whatifsports.com Play it out!

See, now...
If you hadn't limited ot to 25years....

It would depend on how they played. Sissy All-star "rules"? (No contact.) Or Olympic rules.

Go for real hockey, lose the time limit and I'll take any all star team from pre-1965 to kick the spoiled boys asses.

Actually, Martin and Gunther, quotes from the email debate were:

Guy 1:
"Ok, pick any team prior to 2010 that would beat the Canadian Mens
Olympic Hockey Team from 2010. I actually had any team in mind and even mentioned you could put together a fantasy team..."

Guy 2:
"no NHL team should ever be compared to an Olympic Gold Medal team, so to be fair in comparison, EVERY NHL ALL STAR TEAM in the past 20-30 yrs could beat team canada 2010, on any given night, yes."

Guy 1:
"care to take that statement to a vote on the Hawthorne Villager?"

and here we are...

Option 1 says they are both competitive and evenly matched.
Option 2 and 3 are no contest, both ways.

LOL that wasn't the debate. You can win your own little debate against yourself, but that wasn't one of the options my buddies and I were talking about.

The one guy challenged the other guy to pick / make / build fantasy) any NHL team that could beat the Canadian Mens team. Obviously he thinks they are an unbeatable powerhouse against even a fantasy team.

obviously you've deduced I'm Guy 2 in the re-enactment...

something makes me think you're Guy 1 that created an account just to be here.

Without posting the entire email history, Guy 1 challenged to find (including any NHL fantasy team) a team that could beat the 2010 mens team.
ANY team.
Easily, I found 60 teams that could potentially beat the 2010 Mens team on any given night.

He said find ONE, I found 60.

If that core group was not good enough to win the gold, then Martin wins the argument.

If you check the format of the olympics (DUH), players play for their own country. The 2009 World All Star Team was split up amongst several countries, easily defeated by the Canadian Team. You normally have intelligent posts on here, but this one is a little out there!

Actually, you bring up a good scenarion. the 2009 World All star team vs the 2010 Cdn Mens team.
That'd be a great game to watch, with no definite outcome on either side! Thanks, I guess I win too!

This is the statement being challenged in the debate...

"Ok, pick any team prior to 2010 that would beat the Canadian Mens
Olympic Hockey Team from 2010. I actually had any team in mind and even mentioned you could put together a fantasy team..."

suggesting that no other team in the past 20-30 yrs, assembled with any players, could beat the Canadian Men's team.

I think that's such a silly statement since a myriad of teams, real, or fantasy, could beat the Canadian Men's team. They're not invincible!

Sorry, the guy in my emails is a bit out there at times, so I tried to take my huge favourable position out of the debate and write the poll options fairly even.

In theory the talent gets watered down from there. So it's reasonable to think that the talent for any single European country would be collectively worse than that of the World All Star Team.

EXACTLY, which means that Team Canada 2010 has an easy ride since their competition was watered down. Team Canada vs Europe's best all on one team, now that's a good hockey game, and I'd wager that the worlds could beat them at least at least 1 out of every 5 times, if not more!
Good, i thought you weren't on my side, which you clearly are.

Who cares if it's watered down? The option back on page one is: could Team Canada beat them.

I say Yes.

If I send you my email address, can you add me into this debate you're having?

'Could Team Canada beat them' -- that wasn't the debate at all. Read page 1 again.

The debate was that I couldn't find any team, real or made up, that had a chance against Team Canada.

I'm more realistic about team canada - yes they were good, but they're not unbeatable against 30yrs of hockey history.
As if they could go 82-0 is a make believe season against the All star teams put together over the years?

sure, PM me your email address.

Hey, option 2 got a 2nd vote... Hi Prickly Pete! now that my position is known, that sways the vote. Before that last vote, it was 6-1-1.
