I think I've made my opinion known already :D

The family car is auto though, only because my wife didn't take the time to practice stick when she could have (in my old 5 speed Escort). So when we bought our Forester she didn't have the confidence to get it in manual. And confidence is everything when it comes to driving.

EDIT: My dad only bought automatic cars in the past 20 years. His reasoning was one that I couldn't argue with. He drove a 13+ speed truck every day for 6+ hours. He shifted enough gears driving his truck(s) in the city that he didn't want to have to shift anymore in order to get home. That's a reasonable excuse in my opinion.

I think this settles it. I have the best wife on HV.

My wife drives stick as do I. In fact she taught me to drive stick 12 years ago.

Ditto. Even the '12 years ago' part! All of our vehicles for the past 12 years have been manual transmission.

If I would have to drive just to Go Station and fishing - manual for me.

I'm 44 years old, was driving manual on trucks, SUV, regular autos all over the Europe and UK, North-South-East-West, highways and forests, sand and snow.
Moved to Canada, have to drive even more, but just on highways and local roads, switched to Auto for convenience.

Both my car and my husband's car are manual! Won't go back to auto again. (I learned on auto and only switched about a year ago after 12 years and I'm hooked)

Why so down on paddle shifters?

In my opinion, to have manual, I need a clutch. Everything else is just fluff. I realize that indy cars and lots of fancy ones have it, but I just prefer the feel to a proper clutch and shifter.

As for 'flappy paddles' its a Top Gear reference.

While I love driving a true manual - it's just not that enjoyable for the type of driving I do 95% of the time. My new car has paddle shifters - and again I don't use them 95% of the time. However, when heading to the cottage or some other back road location, they can actually be quite fun. Not in the same 'row-through-the-gears' way, but they allow me to keep the rpm's high and the car very responsive through the twisty bits. The SH-AWD helps as well :)

At the end of the day, it's personal preference; blondes or brunettes?

I would want autotragic for a daily driver, but manual for a summer/fun car. For the purposes of this poll, I'd vote Automatic.

People who love manuals in North America are a minority, that's why manufacturers don't bother as much with them. Everywhere else around the world, manuals are more popular.

The best thing about driving manual besides being more fun is that it forces you to be more aware of the car and what's around you, because you have to downshift or up-shift depending on traffic conditions. I do believe if more people knew how to drive a manual transmission, our roads would be safer.

However, the dual-clutch transmissions now in newer cars (i.e. Porsche's PDK, some Audis and the one on the Nissan GT-R) work really well and shift extremely quickly and imperceptably.

I must say, there are some cool wives here like Devious's, Christina and Annie.
