I may have a great job opportunity. It's in the exact direction of where I want to go in my field and the pay is a significant amount more... the problem is, it's in Markham/Richmond Hill border. 70 km's from here.

Does anyone else do this drive everyday? Are you still happy in life doing this drive everyday? Do you see your kids enough?

I'm at a loss.. I don't know what to do.

As far as happy and family are concerned.... personally, I love my job, which makes me happier at home. Therefore I can spend more enjoyable time with my family. because I work from home, my issue is "turning off" at times. Otherwise.... I couldnt be happier.

The 407 is awesome.....by the time I get my coffee for the morning trip at the coffee shop next to the Canadian Tire on Martin st......I am at work in 40 minutes

I just started this drive a few weeks ago, also exiting at Warden. For me it's no biggie because in time i'll be 90% from home or on the road. But word of advise, because I learned it quickly .... hit the 401 no later than 7am to miss the backup. Anything later, especially 7:30 and you will crawl for 25 mins just to get to the 407 East on ramp. Once you are on the 407 it's 30mins.

Currently I am considering the opposite of this - I just applied to a local company hear in Milton - the job looks ok but the career path may not be the best for me. It looks as if I would have to take a bit of a cut in some things that I have gotten used to (trainning, 3 weeks vacation to start, after hours support).

But it all may be worth the 5 minute commute and identical salary.

At the end of the day I don't love my current job - I don't expect to love the job in Milton - but a 5 minute commute would be pretty sweet.

Can you afford to 407 it every day? Because if not, be prepared to lose 3+ hours a day on the road

If you dont want to pay or cant afford the 407 then the choice is simple......Move or turn down the job.

http://www.407etr.com/About/tolls.htm There is a calculator to figure out exactly the cost for the specific exits/times you want to use. As an indication it says Trafalgar to Kennedy Rd is about $15 one way.

To do the drive youre talking about return trip will be approx 400 bucks a month if you have a transponder.

Even though i work from home, I travel to Markham quite a bit and use the 407. By using the 407 the commute is great. Clear sailing almost the entire way. My recommendation is talk to your employer about covering the 407 costs. In my case they allow me to expense my 407 use. Makes a HUGE difference in the number of productive hours i have in a day!

I work in Markham and take the 407. I have a transponder and the trip is about 11.00 one way (I exit at Warden). I sometimes take the 401 home. The 407 is awesome.....by the time I get my coffee for the morning trip at the coffee shop next to the Canadian Tire on Martin st......I am at work in 40 minutes

Interesting questions.... regarding "happy" and "family". I work from home too, but travel alot throughout Ontario and the US. Markham/Richmond Hill is a stones throw for me. I take the 407, and am at HWY 7 in 30 minutes. As far as happy and family are concerned.... personally, I love my job, which makes me happier at home. I work on DVP and Don Mills. For me 407 is way too far from work. When i first joined this place i tried 9 -5, and also tried 7-4. In both those shifts (taking 401) it would take me about 1hr 20 mins each way (in summer sometimes it would be 1hr 45 - 2 hrs ), so I have changed my hours to work from Noon - 8. Takes me about 45 - 50 minutes. I would not complain about the commute as i really enjoy in what I do. So if this is something you really want, then i would suggest go for it, atleast you will have no regrets. I have no kids so cant say anything about it. However, like others suggested if you can take 407, then i would suggest go for it.

I hear ya.....I got caught in that a few times when I left home closer to 7:30...when that happens now, I take Steeles to Trafalgar and then onto the 401.....taking this route is about 12 minutes to get to the 407

I'd love to be able to ride my bike to work when it's nice out.
