New born on the way - is Diaper Genie the best thing out there for disposing of the dirty diapers or do you have a better recommendation?

thanks.

We have one but we hardly use it. Most of the time we just take the diaper straight to the garbage in the garage it really doesnt take any extra time and then theres never a smell of soiled diaper in your house. They do work well though but again we only use it if we're upstairs and in the middle of something (like bathtime).

Refills are expensive too, far more than the little baby powder scented bags

I have a diaper genie and i find it works very well. I didn't want to get one but since garbage pick-up is every 2 weeks and soiled diapers can't go in the green bin like other municipalities i gave in to the diaper genie... worth the money, but i do recommend stocking up on the refills when they are on sale.

We have 2 diaper genies (one on each floor), and couldn't live without them! We had them when we had our first daughter too. It sounds great to just take them outside, but in the middle of the night, etc., or if you're upstairs, you're not going to run downstairs just to get rid of a diaper! Watch the sales and you can get the refills on sale, and stock up!

Now, we have had 3 in diapers for most of the time, so it's not even a question with the amount of diapers we go through around here! BUT, even when we just had our 1st newborn, we LOVED the system! I don't think you'll regret it at all! When our oldest was potty trained before 2 1/2, then we were down to just 2 in diapers, but now we're just a couple weeks away from baby #4, so we'll be shortly back to 3 in diapers again!

When we brought our twins home, and had 3 kids under 19 months, ALL pooping in diapers, it really says something that our home never smelled like poop!

Congrats, good luck and enjoy!

The green bin that the city gives works perfect, if you want a smaller one for the house the little kitchen one they give is also pretty good, you can hook it on your change table using the hooked holes on the back

We used the Diaper Champ. It works great too and you can use any bags in it. That was one of the drawbacks to the Diaper Genie we were warned about: the need to buy special bags.

Congrats

Cloth diapers and a wet pail in the laundry tub with an odour absorber tub from the grocery store :D ! The wet pail is my "diaper genie". It used to be a home wine maker's bucket and lid.

Justagirl, I'm kinda assuming you don't use your green bin and kitchen catcher for compostable material? I know not everyone likes the system but I gotta say yours is one of the most novel alternative uses for the bins I've heard  .

I have a 3 year old son, so we are nearing the end of diapers now.

We had a diaper genie since we were new parents and thought it was a great idea!

However, after year one I found we were wasting sooooooo much money on the refills. So we stopped using it and went with a basic system that uses regular white bags.

Fact folks. You can never get away from the smell of $hit. And sometimes, it will get on your hands. Eeek. But it is true.

Save your money and get a good pail with a lid.

We love our genie as well! There are ways of using an empty refill case and plastic bags (YouTube it). It works great and saves a ton of money on refills.

We have the Genie.... used it for a couple years... then the cost of bags started to bug me. having the Genie in the childs room, beside the change table is nice, but not really needed IMO.

We now take the diapers downstairs, and straight into the garage garbage.

This way there is one less thing cluttering his room, and one less expense for me. :D

NOTE: The genie works at keeping the smell in until you need to change the bag (cut of the current pouch part thingy). Once you open the Genie to do this, all hell of poop smells attack you

+1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... infinity for Diaper Genie :) Can't live without them. Refills are expensive, but if you shop at Costco, you would be able to pick up 3 pack for $19.99 or go to US, and pick them up in bulk for $6/each.

lol... I use my green bin and kitchen catcher, but I also have extra bins, I do not use them for diaper cause I am past that stage, but I would have. I use them for everything, one for storing my extra bags of flour and sugar, and the other I use to store my barn cat food in the barn... I loves these bins, with the lid that snaps tight nothing can get in. I also multi use my blue bins, you can purchase wall hooks & labels for them I have them hanging in my Garage filled will, balls, garden tools, extension cords.

If you go to the dump, you are entitled to new bins once a year, I get new ones every year and fill them with something.

:)

We also use cloth diapers, we have the bumgenius all-in-one. We use the biodegradable liners in them to catch the poop. So we throw the liner with the poop in the toilet and we don't have to deal with the smell. The diaper then goes into a wetbag that seals in any left over odours.

+1 for cloth. we use a diaper service - Bear Bottoms - and are very happy. they take away the stinky diapers once a week to deal with them :)
