Anybody know what kind of wood that mattamy uses on their front porch? And what might be a better alternative? |

I was talking about the wood used in the railing. It's not pressure treated. |

Our are vinyl and Mattamy's been using vinyl ones for several years, but if you have an earlier home (phase 12 and prior I believe) then they were wood. Here are a few posts that might help you re. restoring or replacing the wood posts: http://www.hawthornevillager.com/phpbb/ ... wood+porch http://www.hawthornevillager.com/phpbb/ ... wood+porch http://www.hawthornevillager.com/phpbb/ ... wood+porch http://www.hawthornevillager.com/phpbb/ ... ood+pillar Good luck. |

All I can say is, USE - END CUT SOLUTION. Without this, your exterior wood and fence-boards are doomed. |

We have the same problem, but some of our railings are completely rotten (we bought phase 1 Mattamy resale and the railings had not been taken care of). We've had quotes for replacing with vinyl, can anyone recommend someone to replace them with wood (just for comparison). |

Hi, can you please elaborate on this product? Do I need to prime the wood with this and then paint on top? Sorry, didn't get a chance to google and would rather trust your advice. I have wooden colums on my porch and it is on my to do list to seal and paint them this summer Thanks! |

Most wood rot starts at the ends of the wood because water is actually sucked into the end grains where it gets trapped and rots the wood. I'm not sure if you have access to the ends of the wood that you are repairing but if so, then coat the ends with an End Cut Solution or wood stain that is thinned so it will absorb into the ends. So,,,, the bottom line is that the ends of the wood must be protected / treated from moisture to prevent rot.
