Press release that came out today in regards to Milton District Hospital expansion... Quote: For Immediate Release
Thursday, April 5, 2012 MILTON HOSPITAL MOVES AHEAD McGuinty Government Protects Milton’s Healthcare QUEEN’S PARK – Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) has received approval for a $22.5-million provincial planning grant to assist with the cost of the Milton District Hospital (MDH) Redevelopment, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn announced today. “This provincial grant is terrific news for local families,” said Flynn. “This funding will allow for the redevelopment of the hospital to move ahead with planning and improve high quality health services in Milton.” The $22.5-million provincial grant will assist with the cost of planning and designing the Milton District Hospital (MDH) Redevelopment. This brings the total planning and design grant to $24-million after $1.5-million was announced in July 2007. “We made the right choice in our budget to protect health care and move forward with the expansion plans in Milton as well as the construction of the New Oakville Hospital,” said Flynn. “I urge others not to make the wrong choice and vote down the budget to force an unnecessary election and put these important projects at risk,” concluded Flynn. -30- For more information contact: Steven Ball, Legislative Assistant to Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn (416) 325-4927 |

Wow, is 24 million dollars normal just for planning a project? Or is that more McGuinty padding where the hospital has to then use specific planners when others would cost less? |

http://www.insidehalton.com/community/m ... le/1330979 Planning and design work. AKA - employing the architectural and engineering firms to actually design the expansion. That's real work, and not cheap. Next will be more definitive timelines (honestly don't know where the health minister got her projections from because you can't put a concrete timeline to a project like this until you fund the design work). Here's a link to the new Oakville Hosptial timeline. It gives you an idea of the process involved. Milton is now where Oakville was in 2007/8. They broke ground last year. Not sure when the completion date is. So based on that schedule I'd expect Milton to be ground breaking for the expansion in 2013-2014. I've crediting them a year because it's an expansion as opposed to a new hospital. http://www.newoakvillehospital.com/Page ... eline.aspx |

Too bad we can't just use the same design as the Oakville hospital (or parts of it). This is why many grade schools are identical - one design, many builds. |

Surgical suites and rooms in hospitals are fairly cookie-cutter (my dad is an architect and has been involved in hospital expansions) but the planning and engineering work involved in upgrading an existing structures electrical and mechanical works, then tying the expansion on to the existing building is not straightforward work. It's unique to the building, plus designing the expansion to fit appropriately onto the building site is also unique to each site. In many ways it's easier to start from scratch on greenfield like the New Oakville Hospital. |

NIT (wit), my loved ones and I have at some point over the years pretty much all ended up at the emerg in Milton Hospital. The difference between us and you is that we recognize that the Milton Hospital served the community it was designed for and is sorely in need of expansion due to the ridiculous growth the Town has experienced. My family is grateful that we have a hopsital 5 mins away from our house and we don't have to drive for 20 mins to get to a hospital. Is it able to cope with demand? Hell no! So there's a wait, there's overworked tired staff and there's a whole lot of room for improvement. Don't waltz into town and start bitching about our hospital. You aren't happy with it? Ante up some dough and some volunteer effort to improve things. @cactus_jack: merci beaucoups for the karma balance. |

Ummm, are you seriously complaining that you spent 12 hours there? That is NOT unusual! It is not a fast-food drive through! Did you have blood work, tests etc? If you were in the emergency department, you must have been sick which means you would need tests. It takes times to result these tests. Go to Credit Valley or Trillium, you would wish you were only there for 12 hours. |

We once went to Mount Sinai...seen by a doctor within 2 hours. That's the only downfall to living in Milton and being quite a ways away from Toronto...way better healthcare in the city than out here in the boonies. Oh well. I still love Milton. |

What would you propose ? When you get there you should be able to bud in line? It isn't the hospital's fault that there is too many people but I bet your the first one to bitch the moment you get busy at work huh? |

No need to clog up the emerg with silly complaints. And no, I do not expect to butt in line. |
