To All Electricians or Handyman,

I have replaced my dimming light fixture with a celing fan in the master bedroom.
Amazingly the dimming switch/slider can control the speed of the celing fan.
Would be an issue in the future? Should i replace the dimming switch with regular switch?

Thanks
Jon

I had originally planned on doing the same thing however with the weird and wonderful way that Mattamy does it's wiring, it was affecting my halls lights as well as making the fan sound a lot louder than what is was supposed to. I have also heard that the dimmer doesn't always provide the draw the fan motor needs and being so paranoid about fires starting in the house we changed it up . As soon as we changed it to a regular switch, all of the issues were solved.

I'm not an electrician but had the same thing done and was told it was not a good idea to have a ceiling fan on a dimmer. I wouldn't mess with electrical work.

It should work with the dimmer as the dimmer's usually have a wattage or motor load rating. I'd check with home hardware or Home depot as you may want to replace it with a switch that can reverse it's direction.

Funny! I just did this yesterday and installed a ceiling fan as well. Today, I switched the dimmer to a regular switch. I removed the dimmer because as fstydiva said, the dimmer was causing the ceiling fan motor to be noisy and unbearable to sleep with it on. Plus, I have energy saving bulbs and those don't work with dimmers, as it causes the lights to flicker.

There are "dimmer controls" specifically for ceiling fans they are called "fan speed controls" and they do have
some neat remote controlled models as well. You just want to ensure the right amount of power is being distributed to avoid burn out, excessive noise or waste of power.

Here's a link to some of the options out there on the market. I bought one of these for about $40 on eBay and it works very well.
