Post subject:  Education Village (Laurier University) Discussion
For anyone following the progress of the proposed Laurier Univserity campus in Milton.

The Province's new satellite campus policy which councillors were also informed of yesterday may have an effect on the proposal which Laurier officials and Town staff are hopeful for an announcement soon, since Milton is a prime area in the GTA for university and college campuses.

More information to come as soon as council hears about any news on this and the hospital expansion funding which we are still waiting for.

I commend your ability to remain positive Colin. I do most sincerely hope the province sees it that way. After hearing and seeing the statistical realities of what the Hospital is facing on Monday night from HHS, and frustration from having done everything the province has asked them to, and still no capital list, then to see this article and recognizing it had the possibility to turn upside down the work done on the MEV my first response was AAARRRRGGGG!!!

A comment that came out of last Monday's meeting when some of us councillors got up to remind people in Milton that the election IS coming up in October and to question EVERY candidate about issues like the Laurier campus AND especially the hospital. We can form our own party... "THE MILTON HOSPITAL PARTY!"

I know I'll be following the local campaign very closely and every candidate and party leader will be asked this question. Anything less than a full commitment towards the approval on expanding Miltons hospital will be considered a failure.

Now just imagine if even 20 per cent of Miltonians did the same. :)

Hi Alphamale

The Milton Education Village is on the west side of Tremaine road at the future intersection of Louis St. Laurent Blvd. south of Dymott. The Town has a sign on the 150 acre parcel which the Town would donate to Laurier University when the Province approves the funding for the campus (see attached link for all the details).

We already have lawn signs with the Grow Milton Hospital network.

The time is NOW!

I still have lots of signs left if youd like one for your lawn. That way the candidates will know...hospital is #1.

With elections just around the corner and news of the hospital expansion I would still like to see which platform also includes the proposed education village before I cast my vote!

Why is this called a 'education village'? Is it multiple universities or just Laurier? Additionally, I wonder if this is a full fledge Laurier campus or just a satellite one offering few programs.

It will be a 150 acre Wilfrid Laurier campus (their Waterloo campus is only 5 acres). The 450 acre education village will also include Sheridan college, a research park (will include R&D companies) and a proper neighbourhood (with highschool, elementary schools, neighbourhood park and village squares). It's not just hype.

It looks good on paper however, translating it on-ground could be far different. First, Sheridan is a community college type of school not a proper univ. Laurier, though decent for arts/humanities, is hardly a name that will pull businesses to the proposed research park.

Waterloo had UW going for it and that city's research concentration is quite unique for a Canadian city. I very much doubt that something even close can be developed in Milton. At least not with the strength of Laurier.

I'm dumbfounded why a university is even a good thing for the city. There are far more important battles (eg Hospital) to be fought.

All I see in a future university campus is drunken kids needing to be corralled by police & hundreds of illegal basement apartments.

Keep in mind, this happens *if* the provincial Liberals get re-elected. Something that's pretty uncertain at the moment.

Being an alumni of Laurier's Brantford campus I've seen what their satalite campus can do for the community- the school practically rescued the city's downtown area. If you know anything about the area- it was a pretty sad place before Laurier came to town. With the growing community, and a younger one at that- why not put a university here?

There are rumours out there that the plan is to make the proposed Education Village Laurier's main campus. The reason I've heard is because Laurier's Waterloo campus is tapped out in terms of room to expand.

That's :? weird as Halton has always been blue. One would expect more help had the conservatives gained power and taken control
