I never realized basements were illegal in Milton. I guess that explains why every Mattamy home has one. |

just walk into milton town hall on 150 Mary St and talk to the reception lady. bring some id, a letter showing your address, and just tell her you have an illegal basement and want to make it legal. Its like $25 or something. |

Question ms. bee When you purchased the home, was that the plan, to rent the finished basement ? If so, and if your Realtor knew that, then did that Realtor advise you to have your Lawyer confirm whether permits were pulled and passed for the finished basement ?? I ask this because the amount of hassle you will need to endure going through this process will be greatly determined whether the basement has permits or not. If no permits were pulled and passed for the basement, then I hope you did not pay extra for that home because it had a so called "finished Basement". |

Its a long process as the Town will inspect framing, drywalling, HVAC, plumbing and other building code requirements |

If the basement doesn't have a separate entrance, you'll need a window that's large enough for someone to crawl out of in case of an emergency. It won't be legal without that. |

Thank You, We appreciate you turning your home into a rental property. This BullSh!! is what I hate. I want to live in a neighborhood of SINGLE FAMILY homes. This nonsense turned my last neighborhood into a shi$ show. Yes, its your home to do with what you please but on the whole it devalues the neighborhood. I am sorry your house poor and feel the need to do this. It should be kept illegal and strictly enforced. |

You can always move to a neighbourhood with million dollar homes. The incentive to rent out the basement is much lower in such areas. What ya waiting for?? |

Can the town reject it based on the neighborhood being zoned as single family homes? |

Can the town reject it based on the neighborhood being zoned as single family homes? God I hope so. This is not what we signed up for. |

Gotta agree. A single resident shouldn't be able to change the zoning of their property without the consent of the neighborhood. I believe neighbors are consulted whenever a major outdoor project is undertaken, such as a structure that could affect neighbors. Multi-family dwellings should fit the bill! I know Brampton's stopped giving these permits out, wonder what Milton's stance will be. |
