Has anyone noticed that many of the trees look somewhat unhealthy, with brownish, furled leaves? Is it a disease or something?

Thanks, good read. I put a 2-4" layer of mulch around ours last summer, leaving 2" clear around the base. Finding that rain and freeze-thaw has pushed this material back up against the tree, I'll have to get on that.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that Town staff would not be bothered to do any mtce. at all on these trees? So it's up to us, eh? I have trimmed low-hanging branches on several of the trees on the walk to our mail box. Most of them have branches that encroach over the sidewalks, great for scratching a retina!

I like tree volcanoes. They look like people care at the very least. Plus, the water table is so high here the roots find it quick. Could be another problem.

I've noticed them along Clark, Hepburn, Philbrook, etc. I'll try and take a picture and post it.

Thank HHI, I took a read through that thread. As JustAGirl was saying though, it seems the root ball is only 2/3 underground, leaving the 1/3 above to become a "tree volcano". I noticed this seems more prevalent with the trees planted in the newer developments. A friend who's Mattamy house is 10+ y/o has trees that seem to be planted deeper along their street.

The problem with tree volcanoes is that many have soil and mulch piled up around the trunk of the tree covering the bark. My advice would be to pull the soil away from the trunk to expose the bark.

That idea is slowly becoming extinct.

Right,,, It sounds like common sence but that does not change the fact that hundreds of newly planted trees in Milon have mulch and even dirt piled up high on the trunk bark of the trees. This will kill many of them. I hope my tax dollars don't pay to replace or treat these trees in the future.
