| Post subject: | Household Movers - Tipping Tips? |
I thought I would ask people about the ettiquette around tipping for movers? I presume that tipping is a common practice. If so, what is considered a reasonable amount? A low amount? A high amount? How would you tip them - each individually, or just a lump cash amount to the team for them to divide amongst themselves? How about timing - at the end of the job, I would assume (as opposed to earlier during the job)? Just curious for people's opinions. |

I provided unlimited bottles of water and protein bars, and then by the end I gave each of the 4 guys $15 cash. |

I think the standard tip is $20 each. I always feel weird tipping after though..... If you tip before, will they do a better job, maybe help out a bit more????? Or is the tip suppossed to be after if you are satisfied??? I greased the Expressvu guy before and I got another run for free and he took his time making the cables look good. I tipped the appliance delivery guys before, the removed the boxes and bent over backwards to set everything up. Matt |

Depends on what they do. I had all our stuff packed in boxes and in the garage. 95% of the boxes where the same size and labeled with bright yellow stickers. All furniture was shrunk wrapped and dissmantled by me. Pictures were also covered in cardboard. All they had to do was move the items into the truck and then into the new house a week later. (Mattamy was late 2 weeks!!) I saved over $1000 just by doing all this. If they do over and above then fine but otherwise they get paid for what they do. |

I don't want to sound like the cheapskate, but my upcoming move will be the first time I employ movers... they're supposed to be tipped?! Movers are expensive as it is, but they get tipped too? I had no idea. I'm glad I saw this thread. Is there anyone besides me who DOESN'T get a tip nowadays for doing their jobs? I can't help but think of the opening scene of "Reservoir Dogs" and the discussion of tips. |

I was just asking as I believe it is a common practice to tip movers, and was wondering what is considered reasonable. Of course, there are many tipping "theories", and whether or not to tip at all is at the discretion of the buyer. As a service, moving does fit the tipping model. As well, when I look at the hourly wage I guess-timate the actual labourers make, I can see why tipping might be commonplace in this situation. I see it as being somewhat similar to a waiter/waitress in a restaurant. |
