We went with SmartThings and love it! 199 bucks no monthly fees, for home monitoring no need to connect your home phone system and works great!

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can let me know roughly what they pay per month for their home alarm system.

Vivint is 53.99 per month. That is wireless and has smart security.

I pay $27 monthly and get $10 monthly discount on Home Insurance. This is a landline connection. I didn't get it for situations when we're out of the house. it's for when we're asleep and I have it set with motions off, doors and windows alarmed.

I'll quote myself from another thread!.

Do you realize you just do your own monitoring with a cheap security DVR?

Just buy a cheap DVR with Email or iPhone, Android app notifications, and you can be your own monitoring station? They are super simple to use. You'll just need someone to come to the house to hook your existing alarm panel to the DVR I/O contacts.

You can do amazing things now with just a camera or two hooked up to the DVR. If you hook up a camera at your front door to the DVR it can even send you a picture of the person approaching the door even before they ring the door bell. It can also detect motion in the house, and send you a picture as well, like when your kids get home or your dog is jumping on the furniture.

This is a decent make and model... but there are TONS of these units out there now...

if the camera you bought have relay contacts.. you could use your camera as a crude monitoring centre as well.... Then you just need to hook your main alarm relay to your camera normally open or closed... then It can also send you messages.

What if the thief steals the DVR itself?

Offsite cloud storage or a drive in a secured location might solve that, if the camera records elsewhere (not to itself).
