Hi all -- please note this is a throwaway account for privacy purposes (mental illness still has too much stigma associated with it) so my apologies for that. I need to find a psychiatrist who will work with me to get an accurate diagnosis. In the past I have dealt with a couple who seem to use a handful of generic diagnoses without actually trying to figure out what may be the real problem, and who don't like you to ask questions about the diagnosis at all, which caused things to get worse. It's getting very bad. I know there are some good people who have advice here, but I also appreciate that the same stigma that prevents me from posting with my normal account may do the same to those here -- if you have any knowledge of a good psychiatrist (doesn't even have to be in Milton! All of Halton, Burlington, Mississauga is fine) but feel uncomfortable posting from your identifiable account, I realize I am asking a lot, but can you make an anonymous account (or PM me) to share that suggestion? Please, if you know of any, you have no idea how much difference this may make to me. Thank you very much in advance. |

Psychiatrists are medical specialists. You need a referral from your family doctor. It should be known that Toronto's leading psychiatrists are extremely difficult to get in with and the waiting lists are verrrry long (approx 12 mths). If you are at risk of harming yourself or others, go to the ER at a major hospital. |

We have a couple psychiatrists at work, and I believe he is one of the top psychiatrists in Ontario... Dr. G. Glancy, (very personable), and also Dr. Voruganti. Who's also very good. Like another poster suggested, you may need a referral. The sh*t thing about checking yourself in, is most of the Psych wards here in Halton are jammed packed. Good luck in your search. Hope this helped. |

Ask your family doctor to refer you. |

It's very hard to find one. It's a major problem and I think mental health specialists will agree. Have your doc refer you, and if you are getting panic attacks, have your doctor write you some Lorazepam for extreme situations. I agree with going to ER for any emergencies. Try to be around people like friends and family.....good luck. |

Benzodiazepines (like Ativan or Xanax) are more anti-anxiety medications. I use Ativan only when I fly cause Im a chicken. There are many anti depressant and mood stabilizer medications out there and only a doctor can tell this person which one (or combination) will be right for him/her. |

I would not suggest the OP go to the ER. They will only tell the OP to see his or her family doctor. But, sometimes depression can manifest physical pain like chest pain and that would warrant a visit to the ER to be checked out. Even then, when their ass is going out the ER doors, they will be told to see their doctor. In the meantime, people in Ontario with mental health issues will get NOTHING from any provincial government programs to help them unless they are in the elite public sector unions where they are pampered with paid days off and prompt visits to see specialists on the taxpayers dime. In the end the OP will search for help, pay for help, and spend endless hours and dollars searching for that magic bullet to make him or her feel better. The OP will likely be prescribed drugs that often make things worse. In the end the OP will just get sick and tired of this mindset and pull themselves together. |

Landlord, if someone is feeling suicidal or homicidal, where do you suggest they go, the park?? The ER at a general hospital is there for that. |

Unless you have physical symptoms then it is a waste of time going to the ER unless of course you are actually in the place telling them when you leave you will be walking in front of a train. Then, they will call the police who will take you to the Oakville sike ward where you will get to see a shrink. |

Wrong. Major general hospitals have psychiatrists to deal with people that come in with feelings of suicide or homicide. No one calls the police and no one is institutionalized. You obviously know nothing on this subject. I work with physically and mentally people every day and I have never seen this. Ever. |

Sure "major" hospitals have shrinks around to help suicidal people but a place like MDH does not. We are in Milton, right? |
