Post subject:  Contact Lens wearers!! Help needed

So I'm going for my long overdue eye exam tomorrow. I know my prescription has worsened because I can't see sh*t! Here'smy probblem, I HATE glasses, and will not wear them. My question is, are contacts more expensive?? I have about $800 a year in eyeglass benefits, will contacts eat up this money? What cost efficient optionsare there?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

P&A...when I joined the visually impaired club 4 years ago, I attempted contacts 2 years ago cause I was tired of wearing glasses...I never got the hang of it but the price was about the same between contacts and glasses.

And HOW do you have $800 PER YEAR in vision care benefits????????

Your $800 should cover it. I use 30-day Accuvue, (ie: 12 pairs per year) comes to less than that. If you get into daily lenses (ie: 365 pairs per year, mega-wasteful) it would be a lot more I think.

Depending on how much your vision has tanked, you may still need to get into reading glasses to use in addition to your lens-corrected vision, for close focusing. They are starting to make bifocal contacts, if you really want to blow the budget.

have you used contacts in the past? I hated glasses as well, but wearing contacts gave me headaches all the time. I couldn't wear them all day.

I ended up getting laser.

It depends on your Rx. My vision is really, really terrible. So when I buy glasses, the lenses alone end up being extremely pricey in order to get them thin and light enough. So for me, contacts are cheaper. I wear both though... I wear contacts for most of the day, and switch to eyeglasses at night (I get dry eyes and they need the rest). I use Biofinity, which are 30 day lenses.. the daily ones are of course more expensive annually. Monthly (or even bi-wekkly) contacts should come in well under the $800.

I highly recommend the Biofinity lenses. They're slightly pricier but well worth it. They're approved for extended wear, so it's not a big deal if you have to wear them all day or sleep in them.

I know why you hate glasses. Because you think you'll look like a geek. 8-)

I personally use Dailies and still have a small stash left over after previously working in the eyecare industry, but you should look into the 2-week ones, or go for a laser eye surgery consult.

That is right Alpha! I can't stand wearing any glasses. Unless they are oversized Tom Ford shades

I think laser is out of my budget, but would be my first choice!

Glasses can be cool and lends an intelligent look to people. I just don't like them personally because in winter, they fog up when you walk indoors, and in the summer or when working out, they fog up from sweating and slip off your face. I have no idea how bespectacled people manage these inconveniences!

See if your work benefits might cover laser eye surgery. I'm a bit of a pussy with my eyes and don't want to do it, nor deal with the potential of having chronic dry eyes after. Interestingly, in my previous job meeting many leading Ontario-based eye-care professionals and surgeons, the majority of them wear glasses....

If you have any Jean-Paul Gaulthier Le Male samples kicking around, hook me up and I'll provide you with a useful Genuine Honda accessory in return that you can use in your truck.

This is what keeps me in glasses/contacts too. My parents both have eye problems, and they're under the care of pretty well-renowned Toronto ophthalmologists and eye surgeons. They all wear glasses.

LASER! LASER! LASER! LASER! LASER! LASER! LASER!

And just in case you couldn't read that LASER BEAM!!!!!

My wife was the same -hatted glasses and wore contacts as often as possible until the point where the contacts bugger her so much she couldn't wear them anymore. Glasses were preventing here from doing some of the activities that we like to do.
Finally talked here into it and we saved up the cash for the laser.
Only regret is we didn't do it sooner. Add up what you have spent on glasses and contact and then project that same cost for the next ??? expected years. Laser is the only way to go,

Good luck

Hi jambel, any after-effects like dry eye requiring Systane eye drops, or pain?

She has not had any problems. If she is tired and staying up too late, like over the holidays, she did have some evening where her eyes were bothering her and were a bit dry and red. She would put some drops in which made it better. Also, as time goes on they get better and better.

We did it in Mississauga and there were 2 types of procedures. They have the radio advertising at $500 per eye and then the newer type which came out to $4500 for both eyes. We choose to do the newer one since this is her eyes for life.

Zero complaints all around. Also - this isn't one example. Between us we know at least 6 people that have had it done and they are all in the same camp - best decision they ever made.
