So, I am thinking about buying a Nintendo DS for my 7 year old. Which one would have better longevity? The reason I ask is that we bought a Wii a couple of years ago, and now there are not too many games for sale. Is the 2DS on the way out, to make way for the 3DS? I know that the 3 DS can play games from before, but is it worth the extra $40?

For a 7 yr old yes.
Under 8 you have to turn off the 3D anyway.
