Would it be unreasonable and out of line for me to assume that some of the professional home inspectors in town might have kickback relationships with some of the local builders (i.e. Mattamy, Sundial) when it comes to appointments where homeowners are hiring them for their 1-year inspections? (i.e. find a problem that could cost a builder thousands to fix, but turn a blind eye to protect the builder from their screw-ups)

It's almost time for my one-year, and I plan to hire one of these blokes. I just thought I'd throw some cynicism out and get peoples' inputs before I consider hiring someone who doesn't work in town. On the other side of the coin though, local inspectors probably know these Mattamy homes inside out.

I was solicited by an inspector named Brad Durant.

Feel free to share thoughts or assuage my uncertainty. Thanks kindly.

The inspector, Mike White of Regal Home Inspections recommended is fantastic....I have referred several of my clients to him as I know him personally, and have had several positive feedbacks from my clients and have now started recommending him to my clients actively.....

As for the kickback option....no kickbacks.

Honestly...Mattamy doesn't really want you to hire a home inspector, think about it, from their perspective, it's less cost for them to not fix something that you don't see....(labour, materials, etc.)

Colin isn't a home inspector...though he can obviously correct me if I'm wrong...(and if you are...TELL ME, cause I want to talk with you!) but he is a home appraiser...which is a service mainly used by banks and mortgage specialists to do bank appraisals to determine value for refinancing and to ensure the purchase price represents the value for purchases.

I used a gentlemen by the name of Martin Sweeney of 'Home Inspection Company Inc.' He seemed be very thorough and it was a very, very educational experience for me,.

I used him when I just bought a resale (7 year old mattamy) about a month ago.
