To the best of my knowledge, they are not illegal in Mississauga. You can having nothing within 5 meters of the Fireplace, you will need a permit and cannot have the fire go past 11 pm. I heard from a friend that they are allowed in Milton, but only for cooking. Goes to show you when the by-law was written. The town has a web page that has the by-laws on it. Might want to dig there. Pretty sure that they are not currently allowed in Milton. Check with the fire department. They would know for sure. |

We are also interested in installing an outdoor fireplace once we complete our landscaping at the back. Hopefully, by then (2 - 3 years) the by-law would have been changed/mofified in our favour. Derek & Ruvani |

You may also want to check into your house insruance to see if any fires or damage from these outdoor fires will be covered in your policy. |

For every person that uses one properly there could be 5 that dont. And even those who do, accidents still happen. Milton does not have the resources in their Fire Department to be dealing with fires that are as a result of people ignoring the rules set by the town. I know that If my house was on fire I wouldnt want to konw that it took the fire department longer to get there because they were dealing with a fire at another house started from an owner that thought they were above obeying the fire regulations. |

 Personally though, I don't see the issue with a closed fire, such as a chiminea or "screened" unit. I do understand them not wanting people to have open pits or simply burning a pile of leaves. Tim You are right it doesnt have to be an outdoor fire to get out of control or start an unwanted fire. I am sure that it is the opinion of the fire department and town, (since they have implemented and enforce the rules), that outdoor fires are an unnecessary risk, and in the worst case scenario can spread quickly and can endanger many people in the area of the started fire. I suppose the point is that you have to draw the line somewhere... and they did. No open fires, no chimeneas etc. and you either respect the rules and dont have one, or you defy them, have one and run the risk of being fined. |

For all you folks interested to acquire permit for Chiminea: First burning permit day set for Saturday Mar 7, 2006 Think you'll need to do some open-air burning this spring or summer? If so, you'll want to swing by the Campbellville Fire Station on Reid Sideroad either this Saturday or April 8, when firefighters will host open-air permit blitz days from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend the sessions, at which time the fire department personally will issue annual open-air burning permits for $25. Only cash and cheques will be accepted. KEEP IT SAFE!!!!!!!!!! Trini

Thanks for the information. When I moved in last summer I emailed and called the fire department about the enclosed fire places - pits for outside. On the phone they said they were not sure but the bylaws state that no open air fires are allowed in the town of Milton (rural areas are allowed) My two emails (with attached pictures) were never responded to. I'll pop out to Campbellville this weekend to have a chat as I would love a fire of some kind in the backyard... until then I can still drag my electric fireplace outside but I can't roast marshmellows on it

I will save you the trip. The article quoted was very poorly worded. According to the "Talk of the Town" publication which the Town puts out and I received yesterday in the mail"Open air burnning is not permitted in the urban area of Milton. Burning is only allowed in rural Milton" This is for farmers to burn brush and rural homeowners to burn leaves, that is it. It now makes sense why you would have to go to Campbellville to get it instead of Derry or Steeles Firehouses. I read that article too from the Champion. Matt |

so is the Chiminea an open air burning unit? To me open air is taking scrap wood and putting it in a pile and burning it, while a Chimenea to me is an enclosed unit. Either way both should need a permit? or Is a Chimenea with a grill on the top BBQ? Tim |

I think that if you are smart about what you burn in your outdoor fireplace there shouldnt be an issue. Its the fool that would burn leaves or shingles that is the problem here. I only burn fire logs that they sell at Canadian Tire--- burn clean with a very little smoke |
