That's interesting - I like this part at the beginning of the article:

Quote:
based on a fancy formula that screens out family factors that give some schools an edge

The report itself doesn't even describe what their formula is:

Quote:
Percentile: A performance measure adjusted for observable social and economic characteristics and variation
in the average score on assessments. Percentiles go from 0 to 100. Schools that score exactly as predicted get a
percentile of 50.

How did they arrive at their predicted pass rates? Not saying the article is wrong, or the report is wrong, but really they need to show their work. Has anyone else been able to find the "fancy formula?"

I'm not disagreeing with the advantages of learning another language...2 is definitely better than 1

French is a dead language being propped up by government. It has some real value in Canada but otherwise not much.
You would be better off learning a Chinese language. Or even German.

My comment was more about the motivations I think many parents have for putting them in FI.

Makes the kids more employable. I don't care what job you are in, bilingual has more opportunity and better pay cheque

The country is officially bilingual but only 1 small province is officially bilingual and most of us would very rarely encounter a need for French. I can't think of the last time I needed to speak or read French.

Ottawa region and New Brunswick bilingual is pretty much standard. Same with most of the cities east of Toronto on the way to Montreal.
The only provinces where french is not required day to day would be west coast assuming they never need to call outside their home province.

In my experience FI is heavily full of children of immigrants. For these kids French is often their 3rd or 4th language.

So what? Our relatives are immigrants in Belgium. It is norm at their schools to learn multiple languages. It was norm at schools in Russia before socialist took over. Ontario schools are driven by brain-washed socialists it seems...

You do know that Ontario students are required to learn 2 languages until Grade 10, right?

I wrote that because life clearly hasn't worked out the way you'd hoped for and I am genuinely sorry for you.

I think you must have a screw loose in your head or something.
We are total strangers on the internet and yet you think that you know all about me, eh? LOL...
Do me a favor and stop answering my posts, okay?

You obviously have an ax to grind and find it difficult to remain objective and on topic. I have nothing else to add or say to you.

Old people are always confused at how the internet works. You've just made him do the opposite!

FYI you can click on a users profile and add them to your "Foes List" which will prevent you from seeing what they write (you can still click on it to see though, and I know you will!).

Lol, sorry I didn't mean to upset you. I guess there are deeper issues with you if something a total stranger on the internet says has such a giant impact on you. I'll listen to you and stop answering your posts from now on but I will say, hang in there my friend, life can get better and you can find the positive in the world. There's lots of groups that can help you. Try joining one of the walking groups at the mall or something. Would you consider getting a cat?

It actually is quite funny this needs a disclaimer but for the easily offended do not click here

Involves racist parents defiling certain religous books and near rioting which causes Peel school board needing to shut down the meeting
This is what idiots like Kevin Johnston are pushing for

I'm sure that wasn't his thinking in doing this.

Will you all join me in my crusade to eliminate the term "reach out" when used in place of contacting someone?

Like, did you call them? Email? Speak to them in person? Just say that!
