Builder is charging almost $2000 for upgrading 200 amp. Is it worth to do with builder or do it later.

That's a high price to pay. In fact, that's the highest price I have ever heard for this upgrade by a long shot.

The question is, why do you think you need it ?

With the rise in popularity in EV (Electric Vehicles) this makes sense. They draw 30-40 amps to charge and that is a large chunk of the common 100 amp service.

It's funny... the physical cost of parts, the box, wire and lugs they use for 200Amp service is basically the same as 100A service. But what can you do eh?

It's true EV can draw up to 40A, but it will only draw what it needs, and you can always charge it over night when least amount of current is being drawn.

I've seen lower prices for an actual 100 to 200Amp retrofit!

That seems to be an obscene amount to charge for a new build option.

Get a quote from a local electrician to do it after possession, as it may actually be cheaper than what your builder is offering!

That's the best advice. Considering that it is a new build an electrician should be able to easily give you a quote. Just make sure the electrician quotes you on good equipment like Siemens brand products.

It is a 3000 sq feet house and planning to build basement after 1-2 year. Talked to couple electricians and got quote between $1500 to $2000. Not sure what will be price after 1-2 years.

Mattamy is charging $1400 to $1600 depending on a model.

I would just get it done. I have 200 amp service (similar square footage) and we are just getting ready to finish the basement. Every contractor I've had in has commented that it's one of the most overlooked upgrades, but one of the most useful for long term expansion (to support indoors and out).

So $1500-2000 now for something you might need, that you might have to pay an extra $200 for later on if you actually do need it? Seems obvious - just do it later if required. If you're putting in pools and hot tubs and having two more families live in your subterranean dungeon, this isn't going to break the bank.

You may never require it anyway.

It's dumb to build a 3000' home with a 100 amp service.

In Oakville Mattamy does not do this and many if not most other builders would never do this either.

There are also other options like 125 amp or 150 amp service.

Given the size of your house and your basement plans go with 200 amp service pay for upgrade , do it through builder since you know now you will need it. If you wait to do it after , prices will go up over time and defeat any savings. I would suspect that type of upgrade is better built with than retrofitted afterwards. Codes will change over time and make it more expensive or more difficult to do it later.

Besides the size of that house im surprised 100 is standard. The builders rationale on 100 is probably things are becoming more energy efficient. That being said i dont buy into that we keep using more technology thats requires more electrical needs.

No. 100 amp for a 3000 square foot home may be standard for Mattamy in Milton but it is not standard in their Oakville homes. Their rational is to save money, not to ponder over their buyers needs for a larger service. Historically homes have needed more power over time not less.

Looks like $851 lump sum for 200AMP service good one that I have at the moment, but I am not planning to do pools or hot tubs, but may finish the basement later.

Did not get the 200AMP service for Mattamy home though and realize only very few go for that extra.

I was also told that if you are going to have pot lights, it is good to have 200AMPS service, not sure though.

Based on the responses it may be good deal to get it for $851+ taxes.
