Simply put, alcohol slows your reaction time while distractions like texting can eliminate reaction altogether. A drunk driver will see a hazard but might be too slow to react. Somebody typing a text message, at that moment in time, might not even SEE the hazard so there is no chance of reaction. Which is more dangerous?

A drunk driver will see a hazard? Really? The cops pull people over all the time who can't walk or see straight they are so drunk. That's just as bad as somebody completely not looking at the road while texting. They are both just as dangerous given the degree to which the person is not able to drive safely.

Peppermint, you misread that link. It sets out that using cellphones etc is distracted driving (and against the law), and that eating, putting on makeup etc. can be dangerous. Distracted driving laws deal with cellphone and related devices.

There's different levels of drunk. A guy who just barely blew over would be legally drunk but still lucid enough to notice a hazard. You could argue that those guys are often the most likely to get behind the wheel because they think they are fine.

Precisely my point about about distracted driving. There are varying levels of being inebriated, and there are there varying degrees of cell phone use while driving.

Nobody honestly thinks texting while driving is a good thing, right? But why can’t I fire up a playlist at a red light? Like, I’m stopped. I literally cannot hit anyone.

Because that creates grey. Cops and courts want black & white. I can’t blame them for that in today’s society of entitlement.
Cops want to retain control if grey will be granted based on the situation and personality they are dealing with. Cops let people off with warnings all the time, but it’s at their discretion exclusively.

There's grey with the amount of alcohol you can have in your system, but nothing when it comes to distracted driving? I'm not advocating for either, but it does seem silly.

There will be grey, but start with B&W and your attitude earns you grey. Cops are OK, but they need the power from the get go, then relax as the situation unfolds.
Besides, playlist are a gateway distraction, leading to stronger and more addictive distractions.

Our entire justice system operates in shades of grey.

"Today's society of entitlement" = not wanting to be charged with dangerous behaviour when one is not doing anything inherently dangerous?

You do realize there is no difference between me using my car's fancy screen to select my entertainment method of choice and my phone, right? And I can be charged with careless driving by using the former. But maybe not. It's a grey area...

If they allowed people to touch things when they are stopped, they would be less tempted to do so when they're moving (at least I would). It's a bullshit cash grab, it's not going anywhere, and I get why the government does it. But I can still call it out for what it is and complain and bitch until the Liberals get re-elected.

Hey man - the playlist gateway theory has been disproven many times. Playlists lead to marijuana usage, which then leads to murder and interracial marriages.

The cop has no way of knowing if you are loading a playlist, text raging, playing candy crush or watching porn. Your cars fancy screen will only do one of those things.
He should be able to ask and see where things go from there.

My fancy screen does all of those except the porn.

But the playlist isn't the point - it's the rules against doing something with the phone when I'm not moving that grinds my gears.

I'll just continue to assume it's all because a few dummies ruined it for the rest of us and I will continue to be sneaky. Maybe I need tint.

Stopped is not parked.
Think of it like this, do you really listen to your wife when you pause the leaf game, or can you only hear her between periods?
Coach's Corner with Don Cherry being the grey area of your distractionability.

I don't even know what we're talking about anymore.

I'm gonna pack a bowl while the car warms up. I'll get a rockin' playlist going once I hit the road. Text ya when I'm near.
