OK, i am planning my deck to built over May 24 weekend.

I found lots of US and some Canadian wood span documentation. Some of it appears to be from cities. Is there a wood span document or something for Milton for building codes or Toronto?? I have been using google but have not found anything.

Basically I am building a 6x10 deck off my existing 4x4 that Mattamy built. (deck will be "L" shaped to accomodate BBQ and 2 muskoka chairs) The 6 feet is the width against the house and 10 feet is the length. I am planning on using 4x4 posts 4 feet down and want to know if I use 2 posts to run the girder for the 6 foot span with 2 2x8's and how many sets of girders I need to support a 10 foot span with 2x8x10 being anchored against the wall.

To simplify, can I just have t 4x4's 9 feet from the house that will support the 2x8x10 joyces?

Thanks
Matt

I do not know if you have already built your deck, but the requirements by code are as follows:

1. The minimum distance from your house for a post is 4 feet
2. You cannot set the post in the ground you must build a concrete piller and attach the post to it.
3. If you attach the front end to the house, I would suggest placing the posts 8 feet out and have a 2 foot over hang. The posts at eight feet should suppor the beam which runs perpendicular to the joists, which should be 2x8. The maximum overhang for 2x8 joists is 2 feet.

Technically whenever you are building a deck that is either attached to your house or greater than 100ft2, you need a building permit. The fact that you cannot put posts within 4 feet kind of is a catch all to make it a requirement to get a permit.

Matt,

If you visit www.timbertech.com there's a spot where you can enter the dimensions of your deck, etc, and it will create an actual plan (locations of posts, beams, etc) with 3D diagrams and building instructions. Pretty cool.

I did it with the idea of doing a composite deck. Haven't tried it for treated wood.

The nice thing is, with the new baby, you have lots of free time for deck building!
