Can’t I just vote for who I think the best candidate is, and what party’s platform will serve my own best interests just like I’ve always done?

So naive about politics

Its all a game
Why else do you think they constantly redraw borders for voting districts and how some peoples votes count more than others

Was this tongue in cheek?

We're not perfect here, but if you look at a boundary map you'll see we don't have the gerrymandering problem they have in the US.

They JUST re-did boundaries again (although to be fair yes our stuff is nowhere near as bad as a typical US riding)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but i'm afraid I'm going to be voting *ulp* for Fordsie. I'm hoping for a minority PC government, I don't want him on a long leash with a majority. Wynne personally belongs in jail, and I just don't think I can handle the sight of her any more.

Isn’t it the worst? Why do we always have to choose between terrible and awful?

At least with Ford in we can hopefully stop teaching little kids what their body parts are called. School is no place for education.

Yes it's a toughie, but I've done my hand-wringing over this. Fordsie's social agenda concerns me less than Wynne's, and on balance I'd rather have public funds handled by assholes than by career criminals. These are my basic premises, and I will be ignoring whatever fine-point platform details fall out of any of their mouths in the next 6 weeks. The only potential hang-up would be that if Ford wins and proceeds to make an absolute fool of himself in the next year, he may accidentally aid T2 in winning in 2019, driving Ontario federal ridings away from the conservative brand. That would be bad too.

Its not thoughtful voters you need to worry about, it's the majority that vote on gut-feel, half-truths and cosmetics, making their minds up in the car on the way to the polls. That's how we wind up making massive spectrum shifts like Rae >> Harris, like Harper >> Trudeau. How Wynne has survived this long blows my mind, and confirms that Ontario is full of some of the densest, most gullible voters in the free world. But don't be surprised if she bags another one, she knows what fools are out there, she's made a career out of this.

Yeah I totally get all that, but Doug Ford. All the showers in the world wouldn’t be able to make me feel clean again. Same with Kathleen.

If our local candidate seems cool enough I’m going NDP. Or whoever the union tells us to.

Then maybe nothing will be done, the back and fourth jabs and slander will never end, and it will result in another election within 2 years or less that will likely lead to a massive majority for the party who is "trying" to run the province.

The combined effects of the kind of voter you describe (read: "are"), plus Red Tory types like myself will have the desired effect for a minority Fordsie win. The fact that you (or I) don't know the NDP candidate at this late stage is fascinating. But they'll clutter up the results with a 15-20% share. Is it the same person who ran last time whose name nobody knew a month out? Don't know, and it doesn't matter!

Also, in your post replace "union" with "religious authority", and there's another interesting ingredient chucked into the stewpot. It's amazing who some people vote for, isn't it?

Baby steps, HHI. Baby steps.
